I've had SH3 for a couple years now but had not done any career work. What a mistake this game is awsome! The weather effects alone were worth the purchase price.
I've run into some unpleasant 'things'. On two patrols in a row I came across a lone cargo ship, intercepted and set it up for the kill thanks to the great pictorial tutorial on how to intercept ships and fleets that can be found here, and proceeded to waste 5 torpedoes with only one hit on each patrol. And I was in close. Oddly the best results were obtained when farther away from the target, say 1000+m. After getting a hit on each ship it slowed down so I set up and lay in wait for it to cross directly in front of the sub at 90 degrees. So they were straight shots at the ship from as little as 120m! And the torpedoes missed. Quite disconcerting to do everything well, wound a ship so it is at 0kts, but not be able to sink it because I've used my supply of 5 torpedoes. Also, on both patrols the seas were rough. I tried to use the flak gun to finish them off but got the message seas are too rough for the flak gun. So I was left sitting 100m off the port bow of these cargo ships with no way to sink them. Do the rough seas cause the missed torpedo shots? What is odd is that the torpedoes would pass under the ships and explode some distance on the other side. Freaky. This game is so cool in general. The sounds and realism of the ocean are superb. I keep wondering why my flight sim games can't make the ocean like that. Gibbons |

Torpedos require a 300 meter running distance before they arm (to prevent them from blowing up and damaging the sub). Sometimes you can get away with a magnetic torpedo at less than 300 meters, but not much less, so it's better to play it safe. Firing between 500 and 1000 meters gives good results and plenty of room to spare. You can sink small boats with the flak gun but it's not very useful against larger ships.
Good luck and welcome to the forum! |

Welcome aboard!
Like Elmer said, it is possible to be "too" close. 120 Meters is way too close! BdU says Be Aggressive but you are too much! ![]() I would not shoot under 400 meters and most of my shots are at between 700 and 1,000 meters. At those ranges your margin of error is not too big and even if the ship sees you, there is not much it can do before the torpedo hits. I think we have all been there in the situtation of no torpedoes left and a crippled ship. Blast that "can not man guns in rough weather" I am the Kaluen and I will say when the crew gets out there! Makes me so frustrated that I want to do something about it.... like change a configuration file or something (innocent look). Good luck with your career.

is there a mod to tweek the gun in less than clear weather? I understand that its not gonna be much use in 15m/s gales but as long as the planes are able to fly, i should be able to shoot. specially the terrible 7 m/s one: its a beautiful day, man the gun when i tell you to!

That means the max weather you can fire the gun is 7, and the max rain is 0.1. Change them to 11 and 0.4 and you'll be able to fire the gun in those conditions. Change them to 15 and 1 and you'll be able to fire the gun in a hurricane. The downside is that those numbers also control your watch crew's rain gear, so they'll be out in that hurricane in regular shirts. Me, I use SH3 Commander and set the waves to x2. When it says 7 in my weather report the waves are washing over the deck and I don't want to send my boys to the gun. And WELCOME ABOARD, both of you! ![]()

Welcome aboard!
Your torps can go underneath the target in heavy seas if you don't watch the depth setting. And if you set them shallow, they can explode on waves. All sorts of challenges ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the welcomes and the info and tips. I checked the draft of the C2 cargo and it is 3.3m I think the auto torp settings are set at 4m or 5m so I set it at 2 with good results. Also will use the 500m to 1000m for setting up an attack.
Also was able to 'purchase' a VIIC. Now have alot of toys to hunt ships with. One question. I like to be able to rest people whenever they need it. If you have a full crew it makes it hard to rest everyone. My idea was to leave 3-4 empty crew slots to free up room in quarters for when needed. Any reason I shouldn't do this? And it seems rather hard to hit a destroyer from a thousand m. Even when it isn't zigzagging. 500m minimum when firing on a destroyer? I managed to sink one British destroyer but was close in. On another from 1000m the torpedoes wound up paralelling the ship. Thanks again for the welcome and info. This forum is busy!! Good to know. Gibbons |
