Ok. so U94 was approching a large convoy but was detected by the escorts, my fault for trying to take the boat in on the surface at midnight when it wasn't pitch black, it still looked like daytime infact but i was hoping the fog would mask my appraoch, never mind.
Anyway, when I was diving down, my boat appeared to be "rear end" heavy, I had no flooding damage or excess water in the boat, but my CE could not maintain the boat at the depth I required. I had the boat sink down to 240mtrs (yes, the hull held together to my amazment ![]() That was the only way I my CE was able to hold the boat then when I ordered us upto 200mtrs. If I ran the engines at slow, to 2knts, the rear of the boat seemed to pull us back down. My only theory is that the trim on my boat was screwed up which is my I couldn't keep her level without a proper 5 knots or so. Anyone know about this? |

Interesting. I've never seen this in SHIII GWX 1 (I'm just loading up GWX 2.0). But I do see it in the U-Boats in SHIV 1.5.
Basically below around 180m of depth, unless I'm at all ahead 1/3 I start to descend. Lost my boat that way. In SHIII I could just hang at any depth. |

If you'r running below 2 kts in GWX 2.0, it will not keep depth. I do believe it's in the Mannual somewhere. Someone from GWX team will come and say so one way or the other

Much depends on the year (e.g., did one of the escorts have radar?), your speed (you need to be going ahead slow at most), sea conditions (you should fear a flat calm), visibility, escort crew quality, etc. The degree to which your monitor shows the scene as light or dark shouldn't really affect the escorts' ability to see you. It is usually in the experience level of your control room as a crew,, If your green bar is low,, you will sometimes dolphin and then steady out.

Good morning out there!
Hmmm reading the first post I have a suggestion .... maybe it´s the Boat Number ![]() Because I use the same! To be honestly I had the same experience 2 - 3 times now and not that deep! Should be End 1941 (Patrols August to November) when it happend first time! I comanded 175 m depth to evade the damned DD and rig silent service (Schleichfahrt) "The Boat should work with this LI!" Then when I comand turn left right, the LI say something like critical depth, nervously I looked at the Tiefenmesser and there is seen 200 m (!!!!) So now I always show my place withe unrig Schleichfahrt and go to 4 knts in the deep when turning! Luckly the don´t catch me til now! Mods included:

I confirm this problem!
![]() I always have to be very careful to stay above a certain depth if I want to keep my speed below 100 rpm. Otherwise you cannot convert your descent and you will be crushed, unless you increase speed, alarming the escorts. There is a point of no return somewhere at very low speed. This point for the type VIIb/c is closer (150-170?) to the surface than with the IX (170-190?). I am surprised that there are other kaleuns who seem to have no problems with this phenomenon. I am using GWX2 and no mods that changes anything other that sound and graphic files. |

had a similar experience with a VIIc boat while evading DCs ... I was at 160m silent running 2kts (100rpms) and suddenly the boat started to fall.... fired the engines up shortly to avoid the DDs hearing me to get up to 155 ... and fell again... I then let the ball fall toe 180 (VII took it with no problem) and started the engienes again... did this 3-4 times till I was above 140 and then the boat was stable......
but my new IX never showed this...well... so far....

I too have had this problem keeping depth constant without increasing speed.
Late in the war I was around 240 meters and I needed 1/3 speed just to maintain depth. This made the depth-charging escorts very happy and appreciative. I would be equally appreciative if any of the GWX crew could tell us what depths each type can go before they become too negative for slow silent speed? What I am looking for is the max depth I can run and maintain my depth with no more than slow with silent running. Any deeper and I may negate the advantages of silent running/deep depth.
