Erm. I've just started playing SH3 and I installed the GWX2 mod. I've not played vanilla SH3 though. On my first patrol of a career I was sent to the Orkneys area from Kiel. I managed to find and sink one cargo ship, then I ran out of Diesel on the way home, but I suspect I would never have made a return trip even if I just went straight there and straight back. Should I have refuelled somewhere on the western coast of Germany on the way out?
I've seen several FANTASTIC tutorials covering varius subjects, the work you guys put in to help idiots like me is phenominal. Is there any tutorial that will go over these basic issues, before I can learn to single handedly take on the Royal Navy, I need to learn how to do the bread and butter stuff!! Thanks for the stuff on this site!! Domestos |

I have found that 6kts is optimum speed for the little Type II
Also, when plotting a course back home, look at the final distance to go then ask your navigator how far you can go at this speed. That way you know if you will make it back. |

Ahoy Kaleun! Sit down and have a drink! You'll have plenty of time to sink ships later!!!

Thanks fer the replies, I'll check that thread.
I kill anything that moves basically, and if it don't move I paint it white. Ciao! edit: D'Oh!! I just read that post, now I know!! I thought I read 11 knots somewhere, no wonder I ran dry! I also went around the top of Denmark to get into the Nordsee. I knew about the Kiel Canal in real life, but did'nt think I could get through in by U-Boot. It's just as well I'm only pretending, eh? This is *ESPECIALLY* critical in a Type IIA. I like playing with the kleine boots, but as soon as I can I trade the IIA in for a IID, which has much better range. That lets you cruise to your patrol areas at 6 knots, then have plenty of fuel to go chasing down targets. With the IIA, you have to let some opportunities pass simply because if you chased everything down you wouldn't be able to make it back to base. You also have to be wary of fuel consumption with the Type VII's, and the IX's (on edit: Except for the IXD2, of course), but in those cases you generally can be replenished (for instance, by the Bessel at Vigo) if you are far from home. There is no such option in the Nordsee. Oh, and welcome aboard, Domestos.

stop putting yourself down - you cant know it all in one go, and ask as many questions as you need.... when you set off - keep it to a steady 6-7 knots, use your time compression to get to your grid ( dont think you get renown for arriving in grid in gwx2 ?), whilst there spend a few hours below, at about 20-30 metres hydrophoning. if you are in the north sea go the east coast ports like aberdeen, firth of forth, the humber estuary, north of scapa flow, the thames estuary, stay about 50 - 100 km's off shore - stay out of the shallows !! fast speed is for getting in and getting out - GETTING AWAY and getting down below faster: IMHO. I don't manually set for 6 knots. I've always used "Ahead 1/3" and I've never had any problems with the IIa getting anywhere and having plenty of patrol time, even before there was a Kiel Canal mod.

I always "top off" in Wilhelmshaven before heading to the English Coast in my Type II.
