SH3 Modding Bible?

As some of you know, lately I've been looking for some specific enhancements to SH3, namely, the slideout depth gauge.

Making sense of these various files, what to change or not change, what to add or not add, is daunting to say the least.

In the long history of this forum, has anyone ever compiled documents on how to go about creating mods? Not just simply brief overviews or one-page newbie introductions, but work detailed enough to give senile old farts like myself a fighting chance at grasping the finer points of things like parent-child nodes and the inner workings of .ini, .cfg, .sim, .zon, and other file formats.

Does anything like an SH3 Modder's Bible/Encyclopedia/Classroom exist?

I'd be happy just to get a good idea of what to do to create that slide-out depth gauge as a start. I know it has something to do with the contents of "..\data\menu\GUI" and editing "menu_1024_768.ini".

( I'll worry about adding mines and mine launch tubes to the VIID later. ).

Good link!!

Racerboy I believe also posted a Document.
It's a bit heavy on Hex for a beginner not use to hex,
but it's still worth grabbing.

Check his links.
It should be there.

Thanks for the link ,rdp, but that mostly has to do with the modding tools and has very little documentation on file formats.

privateer, I finally found Racerboy's SH3 Modding Bible and it does seem to be a little heavy on using hex modding and way over my head (for now).

I was hoping someone had perhaps compiled more basic info such as could be used to modify the various files with nothing more complicated than a text editor and Photoshop.

Thanks for your efforts and attention.

Thank you very much, Mikhayl!

This has pointed me in the right direction, I think.

By the way, I really like your idea for using buttons to slide out the numerous charts and maps that seem to have piled up. Sometimes it can be a horrid mess trying to keep them organized and out of your way when all you can do is drag them.

I hope you've made progress with your mod since that post and I'm looking forward to a release. Good work!

Hi Graf Paper,

I just started such a thread in the german forum, it grows time by time, and maybe I will translate the endversion. Meanwhile ..... look at the screens, they may help a bit .... and ask if you like

http://forums-de.ubi.com/eve/forums?...6&r=6881056526

CU

p.s. the tutorial is the second part of the thread after the mod, which I use for explanation

THX a lot

i´am a "part time modder", and everytime i get started, i had to learn nearly from the beginnig again,
it´s a very confusing job

thats why i try to write it down ---- and for everyone, who like to design his own SH3/SH4

and if you have written something - even messy´s - if you like to contribute, your work is warmly welcome and will be mentioned ---- EVERTHING helps

Vielen dank, latemail!

Ich spreche kein deutsch but I have made a rough english translation of your tutorial by using language translation software.

You tutorial posted with the SH4 map tools mod is very well done and I'm looking forward to your future posts.

Perhaps this thread here can become the english version for modders to post their tutorials and findings and allow the title to be changed from "SH3 Modding Bible?" to "SH3 Modding Classroom".:hmm:

Come on, OLC and Mikhayl! Post some of your own tutorials. I assure you there is at least one very eager student here.

Why do twice the work? If we all contribute to one tutorial, well, there are people around who are willing to translate this sort of thing... when the tutorial is finished I'm sure someone will oblige!

Twice the work of what, OLC?

No matter who does the translating, the english versions would have to be posted somewhere so why not here?

I figured this could be a good start. That way, some willing person can also translate english tutorials here into german for latemail's home forum if anyone so desires.

If you or anyone else decides it is better to add to the ubi.de forums, then go right ahead and do so but not everyone that has SH3 modding knowledge to share can write in languages other than english.

Ideally, it would be a great thing if we had volunteers translating information and documents for SH3 into any language for the benefit of all Kaleus but, in reality, that would probably work as effectively as the United Nations.

That's too bad, really, as some of the mod ideas from eastern europe and certain asian countries are very intriguing, based on the few scraps I've gleaned using web page translation tools.

If anyone wishes to share, then by all means make your posts and let the classes begin!

Writing two tutorials is much more work than writing one tutorial and then translating it. A lot of thought goes into writing a good tutorial. But I agree that the English version should be posted here.

Same with me

But while writing the tutorial I do a lot of testing - not only for the screenshots - so I hopefully get some fundamental informations, which will help me to understand the single functions .......... to get results not only by try-and-error

and I will often visit the subsim-forum and this thread, where I already get some very good help (someone knows what I mean ), and so hopefully my english will become a little bit better again, good enough for a draft-version I hope, which of course will be posted here ...... some native speakers can then do the rest/best

and I like the imagination of a classroom : I will pick up all hints, tips and questions posted here - my english is already good enough for reading/following the discussions - and I will add them to the tutorial with examples and solution .......

THX for your support and your encouragement .... I will do my best, keep in touch

Here's a suggestion folks..We at WaW have started a "Wiki" to store most of the info that is needed to operate...and I'm positive something like that would be ideal for what you're proposing here...

Not sure if you have to register to view it, but even so, its worth a look...to see if it's something you could use for this mission...(which I think is an excellant idea by the way!)

http://wolvesatwar.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

That way you won't have to filter thru all the "fluff" of off topic chatter that always seems to materialize.

nice idea ... but I will first put all things together, form and presentation will be the next step ... because otherwise all parts of the project will be starting at the same time, and maybe i get lost between all details

time is rare and RL strong

but thx for the Link, I will keep it ..............
