Default Aggravating Patrol Mission

I've read other people having this issue, and tried to follow the advice they were given, but I still can't seem to get around this problem. On my current patrol (my first career ever), I have a patrol mission. "Patrol off the island of Honshu." I headed directly to the mission icon, and I drew a circle around it with a 100nm radius (I read to stay within 100nm of the spot). Once there, I basically laid out patrol patterns within the circle, and made sure not to leave the circle. I've been in the perimeter for around 72 hours, I've sunk several ships, sent contact reports, even tried sending status reports, and the damn mission won't complete. Is there something I'm possibly missing? How long do these patrols last?

Use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out and see if the icon greys out.

I think that the patrol radius should be 50 nm in the stock game (though I'm not 100% sure about that). I usually just patrol within a 50 nm circle, and I find that the mission completes pretty quickly (~ 48 hours). If you've still got 7 or more torpedoes left after completing the patrol, radio in a status report to get new orders. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. Its' not the mouse wheel issue.. i've seen that with other missions and tried it. I'll try to cut my radius down to 50nm, i just hope the game calculates total time spent in that perimeter, instead of "resetting the mission clock" so to speak once I tighten my patterns to within 50nm. I've hit such a busy area, that I'm already out of torps, so I just want that check mark so I can go home

I use RSRDC mod and I stay within the area specified and for the amount of time. When I get 10,000t of shipping and radio in I get a new mission. If getting no ships I still radio in and get another mission. Are you using any of the realism mods? When I installed them this problem went away.

1.4 vanilla.. but am starting to consider some realism mods. Not just becuase this issue, but I just took out a lone European Passenger Liner with my last remaining torp.
Was a perfect ambush and shot under her keel dead center, which was awesome and lucky, but still seemed unlikely.

I also use 50nm radius, not 100nm. And, AFAIK, it has to be one continues time period - ie. everytime you stray outside of the patrol area radius, the clock resets to zero. You have to stay within 50nm for a single continuous period of time.

Yeah 50nm or about 100km radius and 48 h in there then you will complete the mission and when you will send Status Report then you will get next mission or when you run out of torps you don't get any new objective that mean "Get back to the base or refit your sub".

Using the mods I have (see sigi) the first patrol out is usually to some point near Honshu and the range circle is 150 NM and 72-96 hours.

Agree. In stock game 100 nm is too far. When in doubt, hug the icon (though I haven't been driven to that extreme yet, though I will create a waypoint or two to pass through it.) Use 50nm.

I'm having this trouble too with a patrol in the East China Sea.

For this particular Sea to patrol, the icon is just outside of the, well, I guess you could say the "entrance" to the Sea.

Do I need to sit on the icon, or do I actually need to enter the area that has the letters "East China Sea" to complete the patrol?

I'm hoping the game isn't bugging up on me, I just snuck past 4 radically zigzagging destroyers, torpedoed a Huge Passenger Liner, then got worked over by the 4 DDs and escaped with minimal damage. Can't beat that sense of satisfaction!

Here's how I handle the patrol missions:

1. Zoom all the way in on the star emblem on the map.
2. Select the compass tool.
3. Place the center of the circle (click once) directly between the two bottom points on the star.
4. Zoom out until you are able to make the radius of the circle 50 nm in size.
5. Place the circle (click a second time) on the map.

Now just patrol around inside the circle, making sure to stay inside of it for 48 hours.

When you get a 'deploy' type mission, all you have to do is go to the specified area (the star on the map), and you'll get a second set of instructions. After the second message, you're free to go wherever to sink ships.

Good luck!

Thanks mates, I was having the exact same problem I'm afraid I was missled by the info about how to complete a patrol here

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111509

I added a post at the end of the thread about the correct radius.

One I reduced the radius to 50 nm the mission was completed after 48 hours.

Thanks again
