BDU Analysis of Balz's 100K Patrol

From Kkptn. Lutz Schraube
Ops. Officer 2nd U-Boot Flotilla

U-52 Patrol 6-30 April 1940 (Balz).

U-52 left Cadiz at high speed to take advantage of the few days of predicted good weather. The commander had made careful plans taking into consideration known shipping routes and most probable ones. He used a 20 kilometer wide zig-zag route toward Cape Sao Vicente and sunk 2 ships with the deck gun. Off cape Sao Vicente, he sunk two more ships.

A speedy dash south revealed two Frenchen travelling together. By the time the weather changed, U-57 had expended all but 17 rounds of 98mm shells.

Noticing that traffic going to and coming from Gibraltar used several scattered routes approximatelly 20 kilometres appart, U-52's commander adopted a tactic of high speed north-south dashes with frequent listening dives.

Although, there were periods where no contacts were made for several days, the tactic often produced several intercepts a day. The enclosed chart shows how scattered Allied shipping is transitting the area. (GWX2.0). It also shows the accuracy of Lt. Balz's forecast routes.

I can barely manage 100k in a type 9.

gratz.

Gerhard Kohlmann has to learn some more b4 he may sit next to Balz

P.s. I play 90% realism.. (using OLC GUI so I have the steady periscope)
I only leave F12 open for use. I still enjoy the scenery to much.

Nice area

nice area, where you don't have to watch out for traffic for days and days...

Better then the north atlantic where you can patrol a 1000 nm without any contact at all....

And you have a nice coastline to see, if you get bored

my current favourite hunting grounds are Gibralter (1942 so its bloody hard as hell, got sunk there and rose my ship like das boot when i first entered the med... never attempted to leave it.) and between Sicily and Malta... the Maltese port holds a nice bounty of ships putting out and docking... not to meantion the major merchant route from alexandria and (damnit whats that otherone named....) to go to malta and through gibraltar

these two areas yeild plenty of action, and a big challege for those who like to take on warships... *DONT TRY TO GET INTO THE MALTESE PORT THE DEPTH OF THE SURROUNDING AREA IS ONLY 10 METRES OR SO!!!!!!!* i wont make that mistake twice..... welllll thrice.....

or be prepared for a harder fight than crossing gibralter at 1945 lol

Ive sunk more destroyers than I have merchants...youll wish you never sailed into U-87s hunting grounds. When you pull into port, dont lull yourself into a false sense of security, your mines and subnets are just a petty challenge for my crew and I.
