Hi guys... I just have a question for the community.
Has anyone of you finished a succesful career by just sticking to your orders (Patrol zone and time) and return to home?
And something else, for the history lover sailors among us, did the U-boots wander around the seas after their patrol times were finished, looking for targets of opportunity?

The patrol sector is just the beginning of the patrol. After you're done there, you begin to hunt.

I head for a known shiping lane provided i have the eels and the fuel, stay out on patrol for as long as i run out of either, then concider either resuply at some resuply vessel or head back home.

You missed an option

( running out of fuel will just make it back using all head 2 thirds using e-machine everytime it's recharged. )

Unfortunatelly, re-supply is not an option for us, stock versions users...
On my last patrol I decided to get into Scapa Flow, to earn the right to wear a snorting bull on my Conning tower... but, only damn thing I found were 3 DD's!!! Took two of them down, then tried to take the last one (docked) and two of my torps missed then I had my WO calculate a solution, and he missed as well, so... I ended up feeling "not-so bad" (and with a Kinght's cross with Oak leaves??!! ), anyways, I can always remember the young ladies that I've sunk a Nelson Class Battleship on one other patrol!

I must be odd, i patrol my grid until my fuel calculations tell me to head home, the only time i leave is
1) if a convoy is within range to intercept.
2) im ordered to.
3) severe damage.

I admit i dont end up with 200,000 tonnage patrols like some report, but i always get my men home and carry out my orders, and it kind of feels more realistic to me sometimes returning with only one or two pennants flying.

Use SH3 Commander to reset your patrol grid to right outside the harbor, then, after 24 hours, you have the open seas to go where you wish. Normally I go to different shipping lanes for each patrol, though.

You need one more choice on this poll: "When you're out of ammo !"
I don't return until my torpedoes are all gone. So usually I will head for the nearest convoy/merchant rout and shoot untill I'm empty. Only then do I head back.

Thanks to everyone!
I guess I'm the only one who accomplishes his task and heads back home! I don't know, I thought it would help "reality", but I guess I'll never make it to the top of the U-boat aces board!
Thanks!

Surley by 1942 the only reason a U-boat would return to port would be because it was low on fuel or Torpedos as the country was in all out war. So its probaly more realistic to go on patroling after your 24 hrs is up as would have happened. Not sure about bagging 200,000 ton or a 100,000

I head to my assigned patrol grid with little deviation (ie to sink some ships), than head back to base via areas with know convoy/single merchant traffic.
So it normally takes me longer to get back to base, than it did to get to my patrol grid.

Default RTB when eels gone.

The Type IID as more fuel than eels. So I engage any targets of opportunity while enroute, patrol my area for the 24H and meander my way back home until eels all gone - then I high tail it home.

Originally SH3 was going to have a series of scripted missions. When the community lobbied heavily for a dynamic career mode, the 'orders' were changed to fulfil that system. The '24 Hours' ensures that you get extra renown for fulfilling your mission. After that you can do what you like.

Me, I stay in the same grid. Sooner or later something always comes along, and I find that my scores are more historical that way.
