I am trailing behind a convoy awaiting darkness so I can pull up and use my last torpedo on a magnetic under-the-stern shot.
I have a Flower Class on either aft corner of the convoy. They take turns dashing out to the side for a sweep of the area. Then when the sweeper comes back the other goes out for his sweep. The convoy is 9 ships wide and the one I want is second in on the center column. I thought I would get 2km behind in the dark & wait for the one to go do his sweep & then I would dash in from behind & try my up-the-poopshoot shot. This is October 1940 and I was wondering just how much distance from the target I could get away with on a magnetic shot. The water is almost smooth. I have only used mag shots at 300-400m so far in the war even in bad weather, but I have had excellent success from that distance. I am not sure beyond 400m. This is most likely a dumb idea, but I have very little experience attacking convoys having just come out of lthe North Sea area... |
