What would your boat do? (just for fun)

Time: 1940, late April.
VIIB, 70% fuel, 12 fish remaining, electrics in tubes 3&4.
Ok so lets say your boat is in BE and you've spotted an inbound Convoy moving about 8 knots. We got a handfull of Cargo Steamers, flanked T-3's, one or two Celt's, & Rose's, and the usual tramps along with 4 escorts. Weather isn't super calm but not rotten either. Your about 8000m ahead off the starbord quarter, still time to think about your attack run.*
Your best targets are flanked by other ships (no suprise).
Outside rows have decent targets, if you plug them first it might open the gap for a second run. But 4 escorts have enough teeth to keep you nervious. There will be time for a second attack, but if you wait to long you know what happens in the Western Aproaches, no where to run deep.

So, what would your Kaleun do?

1. If you manage to slab an escort first it might certainly make your escape run better, after all there's more targets to loop back for.

2. If you open the screen sure getting fish to those fat tankers might be easier for a second run, but one, maybe even two less escorts could make that journey better.

3. You could certainly go for the most tonnage, then go deep and get the $$#^ out of there.

*yeah well actually it was about 1 in the morning and I knew if I made the run then I'd be at it till probably 3am.

Why try to open the screen ? If you position yourself in front of the convoy you can easily let it pass you by and you can attack anything from the middle of the convoy then.
To be sure that the front escort(s) don't detect you, maybe you should dive deep and get up when surrounded by the convoy ships.
If you attack from the middle you can also create many confusion and get a better chance to sneak away. Especially in this early stage of the war.

Even in the beginning I had no problems evading the 4 escorts of a convoy hunting me so they are perhaps just not very experienced in using there asdic against you so you can avoid being detected by going deep@1kn.

After my first run, when reloading torpedoes I would definitely take care that after that tubes 1&3 and tubes 2&4 carry the same type of torpedo so that can shoot 2-torp-salvos without mixing type I and II's.
Also I would make a note to take care of an according loadout when I'm in home port next time .

Never waste a torpedo on a worthless escort.

* Position ahead of convoy track submerged at 100m

* As lead escort passes overhead begin your ascent to parascope depth trailing behind escort.

* Up periscope in middle of the convoy and unleash all fish fore and aft.

* Descend to 100m for reload, and repeat if possible...

I maneuver to get the fatties. If I manage to sink two with bow torpedoes and one with stern, that's, 30,000 tons. Time to dive and sneak away.

Take out the T3's, or at least slow them down enough to return to them later. Anything else is a waste of eels.

STEED, you old War Horse

By the way, I'm not sure what's going on in the back of this horse, and perhaps it's better not to know.

Ok so I had time to play out this convoy attack, knew I was going to attempt a second run if I got away. Sure enough 3 escorts tried to slab my boat, mid 40's you can get away from them. Even after they lost me while I was creeping away I watched them pound the crap out of where they thought I was.
And so I was ready with tube 4 depth at 2.5 just in case. Never happened because at the last minute the escort to my port side took a turn and swept giving me more of a hole to work with. I aimed for the two cargo steamers and the T-3. Now usually if your positioned right and set your speeds this works out, but with two t2's a C2 'intercepted one of the fish intended for a steamer and took out it's screws. Wound up scoring the t3 and a heavy steamer, pinned the c-2. One fish was a dud. Finished off the c2 with a stern shot later.
Second run scored a celt, rose ore & another heavy steamer.

You should probably change your screen name to "DeadMan".:rotfl:

Or maybe "King Of The Deadmen".
