Default GWX Medal requirements?

I have had 2 50000 ton patrols so far and not once has my crew been awarded anything higher then a iron cross 1st class.

Do you mean yourself haven't been awarded anything, or your crew? I think for the crew members an IC 1st class is as high as it gets. You need to command your own boat, or at least be an officer on a very successfull one, if you want the Knights Cross or the German Cross.

Medals of any designation can be awarded to any crew member provided the already have the medal below the one being awarded eg; anyone having the gold cross is eligible to be awarded the knights cross

Well, in theory the criteria allowed for the Knight Cross to be awarded to anyone (who already had an IC 1st class), but I think the chances, for a simple sailor on a u-boat, to do something which would warrant an award were rather slim. Personaly in the game I never had an enlisted crew member receiving a KC.

I certainly don't disagree with you there
What I am stating though is the fact that it is allowed within the parameters of the game

Seems a mere seven mates received the Knight's Cross... http://uboat.net/men/decorations/ritter_winners.htm

Though quite a few more (348) scored the German Cross in Gold... http://uboat.net/men/decorations/german_cross.htm

Personally, I've never awarded anything greater than an EK2 to an enlisted man. Stingy bugger that I am.

Ahh I see I was used to the stock game where I could get that Lowly Petty officer Torpedoman a Cross in gold and he would become the miracle worker.

Yep, once a crewman gets a German Cross, he becomes iron man. Indeed, give all your crew German Crosses and you can forget about the need for crew management and fatigue!
