First patrol

Hello all, I've been lurking for a few weeks now. I actually bought SH3 about a year ago and just recently was able to upgrade to a new PC so I can play it now and it was worth the wait. After going thru the training scenarios a few times to adjust from SH2. I entered my first patrol. A Type VII out of Brest early in the war. After completing 24h at my patrol grid I was returning to base and I encountered a large convoy in heavy seas at night. I was able to sneak into the middle of the convoy and drop two C2's and a coastal merchant with my aft tube on the way out. Not a peep from the escorts. I had to save the game at that point because it was already 1:30 AM. So when I loaded it back up the seas were calmer. I continued on back to base when I encountered another convoy at night. I got my self into a position for a shot with my remaining els to go after a T3 tanker. I was able to sneak into position past the screening DD's and I actually got inside the screening coastal merchants but as soon as I popped up my periscope and I was busted there were flood lights everywhere. WOW great eye candy I had to use the exterior view to enjoy the sights. That was until the depth charges started. I was able to finally sneak away after taking 10% hull damage and flooding my radio, flak and deck gun's were destroyed. I was able to repair everything but that stupid valve in the control room. I couldn't figure out how to fix that, is there a way? I was able to get back into base safe with no further contacts. I did get the boys some medals with my WO getting the Knights cross. Here's to looking forward to my next patrol. Bottoms Up, now wheres that cabaret Thomsen was telling me about?

I'm running vanilla with the patch trying to figure out what mods I should download it sounds like GWX would be fun. I think I'll go thru a full career before making any changes.

Thanks! On my second patrol I got into a bunch of unescorted ships. Happy days indeed! I had two unescorted T2 Tankers to finish of my patrol and not a single escort in site!

What is the best way to get screen shots? I used to use some software when I was playing B17-2. But I don't remember what it was, any ideas?

Control and F11 will take screenshots and put them in your SH folder, but they are .BMP files and so they might be better converted to .JPEGs, most file hosting sites prefer .JPEGs, as they are compressed more (with some loss of quality but nothing major).

FRAPS will also take screengrabs (you can choose a folder where you want it to save them).

Using the PRINT SCREEN key on your extended keyboard will also place a screengrab in your system memory, if you do this and then open a photo editing program (such as Photoshop), you can then hit Control N, Return, then Control V and this will automatically create a document at the correct size and paste the screengrab from your memory into the new document. Using this method, you'll have to flatten the file in most picture editing programs to save it in a lot of formats however, as not many support layers other than .TIFF and .PSD.

Oh, and the Delete key on the numeric keypad hides the interface.

Useful info about various picture file formats can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_file_format

Have fun.

I just use Control+F11. They're stored right in your SH3 folder.

Sweet, I started practicing manual targeting last night on the torpedo tutorial mission. Man that was fun. It took a few trys, but there was a satisfying crunch when that ship broke in two.

Uh...i think it's compressor damage - you mean the blast of air coming out of a pipe, or the sprays of water near your XO's head? I think it's usually damage to the control room that - surprisingly - results in those effects.

Btw - Ahoy! Glad you're onboard.
