Default Upgrading boat and flotilla change?

Hi all!

I've just spend over an hour trying to get the correct combinations of search terms, but cannot find another thread that answers my question. Therefore, I hope that no-one minds my posting up another question for all you experienced Kaleuns out there...

For reference, I'm using GWX 1.03 and the standard mods included within. I also launch SH3 with SH3Commander.

I've been pootling about the North Sea in my Type IIA since Sept. 1939 in 1st Flotilla. Now it's January 1940, and I've sunk about 22,000 tonnes (which I'm proud of with full realism except for external camera and map updates!) having learnt how to reliably torpedo single unescorted targets - mainly small merchants or Passenger/Cargos. But now it's time for a change. I want to get a Type VII and go after some convoys...

I applied for a transfer to 2nd Flotilla at Wilhelmshaven, but I still had my Type IIA and was assigned a BExx patrol grid square. Safe to say this would mean getting through the English Channel if I wanted to even get there with my fuel load, let alone think about getting back. So I reloaded the game to the point where I was still in the 1st, and applied to the 7th/13th. At least then if I had a Type II I would be assigned a North Sea patrol... So now I'm midway through this little cruise, hoping that I'll be offered a Type VII when I get back. Will it be forthcoming???

If not, how can I go about acquiring one of the long range boats without having to restart my career? Any advice? All tips gratefully received! Thanks in advance.

When you go to the "office", do you expect to see a Type VII waiting for you, or do you go to the U-Boat menu (table in the lower right of the office) and see if the type VII is available to you? You don't specify. Also, you don't merely get an upgraded u-boat merely because you transfer, or the game reaches a certain date. You have to have enough renown to 'purchase' the type VII once it becomes available.

1st flotilla
Wilhelmshaven 6/39 to 7/40
Brest 8/40 to 9/44
1939 - IIA, IID
1940 VIIB
1941 to 1944 - VIIC

2nd flotilla
Wilhelmshaven 8/39 to 8/40
Lorient 9/40 to 9/44
1940 - VIIB
1941 - IXB
1942 - IXC and IXC/40
1943 - IXC
1944 - IXC and IXD2

7th flotilla
Kiel 8/39 to 8/40
St. Nazaire 9/40 to 7/44
Bergen 8/44 to 5/45
1939 and 1940 - VIIB
1941 and 1942 - VIIC
1943 - VIIC/41
1944 and 1945 - VIIC/41 and XXI

I can't remember properly, but I think you need 3,000 renown to move into a type VII.

As explained above you can request transfer and "buy" a type VII. It's a bit hard but with a few patrols you'll have the wherevitals to get command of a new boat--best of luck

If your using SH3Cmdr why not start the war in 2nd Flotilla you then have the choice of a type VII or a IX

That was what I thought. But if I didn't have enough renown, I should still be able to see the Type VII in the sub upgrade menu with the amount of renown required shouldn't I? It doesn't show the Type VII as an option...

Here are the dates of availability for the various u-boat types. So, if it's March 1940, a u-boat won't show up on the list if it doesn't come out until July, as just one example.

Well, I don't know why, but I fixed it. I took another patrol out of Keil, and upon my return the VIIB upgrade was available for 2500 renown. (I had 4900 available, so no problems). So now I've expanded my crew, and am off on longer cruises with more torpedoes. Perhaps I can find some big fish now instead of just small merchants and tramp steamers...
