Default New to GWX

Heya guys,

I've been playing SH3 ever since I first bought it in '05, however last night I finally decided to download GWX. First impressions, well, what can I say - Brilliant!
Totally transforms the game. I know you guys all already know that, but i'm like a kid in a candy store at the moment (you cant wipe the smile off my face). The detail increase is nothing short of superb! Its like i'm playing a brand new game. Much gratitude goes out to the team that made this

I do however have a question regarding the map / chart view.
When I zoom down to the level where you can actually see the outline of the boat or sub, since installing GWX, I now seem to have a very large square of solid grey which blocks me viewing my sub - and any other ship if it is close enough. The sqaure seems to have approximate dimensions of a good 2 to 3 thousand meters around where my sub would be.

Is this a known issue? I have patched GWX to 1.03 - however I never ran it without the 1.03 patch (I installed the patch as soon as I installed GWX), so I dont know if it would do the same thing in an unpatched version of GWX.

The game is still very playable, i'll just have to get used to not being able to zoom all the way in if this is the way it is.

Appologies if my question already has an answer online, I tried looking through the forum and the GWX manual for known issues, but couldnt find anything about it...

Wow! I haven't seen this problem posted for a good two years!

IIRC the cause can be one of three things:

- a problem with the source image (ie incorrect masking)
- a problem with your video card rendering (ie old drivers, old card etc)
- a mess of mods installed that aren't compatible with each other

I'll rule the first out now, as I know for a fact that the source image is fine.

ah ok.

No other mods - I had a fresh "clean" version of SH3 patched to 1.4b, so I dont think its that then.

Graphics card - well, could well be. I am running a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (128mb ram)
could that be a problem?

Its strange though, I never had this issue with standard SH3 - its only since installing GWX

Another question, I just finished my first patrol, and returning to dock at Wilhelmshaven, as I was coming through the main channel, a German light destroyer seemed to come out to "meet" me. Only problem was he came at me on an almost reciprocal heading (straight at me). I manouevered to pass parallel to him - but still quite closely. We were passing each other at about 50 to 100 meters when he turned hard to starboard and came straight at me!

I had hit back emergency and full rudder to avoid him hitting me!

I then proceeded forward again to Wilhelmshaven, with the destroyer reversing course and following my stern quite closely all the way back....
Weird. Was he escroting me? It was interesting, but really, I was not in the mood for such excitment after such a long patrol!

Hi rb4door,
Just the DD is there to escort you in and out base so you dont run into the mine fields and blow yourself up.
It was added by the GWX mod.
When you start your next patrol look out for him about 600m in front of you from where you start the partol. Just follow him out and back in and all will be ok.

Welcome aboard, rb4door!

I'm sure your glitch will be resolved. When I first installed GWX, going into the large scale chart would freeze my game. After several patrols the problem went away.

Harbour traffic will often keep you on your toes, just like in real life (though AI can have odd reactions).

Good hunting, Kaleun.

thanks guys

Well, I should have covered all bases before opening my trap....
I installed the latest Nvidia drivers today and low and behold - problem gone

Thanks for the heads up about coming back into port with the escort.
I just returned from another patrol and the destroyer was there again doing his thing.

Just intercepted my first big convoy in the St Georg's Kanal - wow
Loving the huge expanse of ships included. Those whaling boats sure dont go down easy.

Another question if someone can indulge me, when some of the big ships finally slip below the waves, the big booms I can hear I am assuming are bulkheads collapsing?

If you go to 'silent running' mode and grab the spare headset off the hydrophone guy you might be really lucky and hear a shrimp fart

I've got another little problem: When starting a career in the beginning of the war and selecting the Saltzwedel flotille, the text says this unit sailed from Wilhelmshaven (and it does then later in the game) but the screen lights up Kiel as its base.

Saltzwedel (2 Flotilla) starts in Wilhelmshaven. If you do not start in Wilhelmshaven, then my bet is that you have a dodgy install.

I mean, you say above that you had a "clean" install, but assuming it was a re-install, had you fully deleted all residual files left behind when you uninstalled SH3?

What underpins my thoughts of a dodgy install is that GWX never refers to 2 Flotilla as "Saltzwedel" - only SH3Cmdr gives it that name and only prior to 1 January 1940. And as you say you are using no other mods...
