I don't see the downside from crash diving with Bernard as a look out. I can always retract the periscope while diving... what's the problem?

Seriously I did not think this was really done in real life but on the same page there is a picture that I am sure someone much smarter than I am can post here for amusement. The picture just screams for a "Bernard" quote.

It just seems to put a lot of strain on the periscope.
