I found the perfect job for Bernard

http://www.uboataces.com/tactics-rem...nvisible.shtml

"When cruising on the surface, care should be exercised not to raise the periscope, especially during daylight. When submerging, the periscope should be raised only after the boat has completely submerged. In the same manner, the periscope should be completely lowered before breaking the surface. In clear weather, a lookout with binoculars can be hoisted up on a raised periscope for an all round view, but this should be used sparingly as the dangers are two fold; it takes much longer to crash dive in the event an enemy aircraft is spotted, and a U-boat with a raised periscope is much easier to spot. "

I don't see the downside from crash diving with Bernard as a look out. I can always retract the periscope while diving... what's the problem?:sunny:

Seriously I did not think this was really done in real life but on the same page there is a picture that I am sure someone much smarter than I am can post here for amusement. The picture just screams for a "Bernard" quote.

It just seems to put a lot of strain on the periscope.

give him some ear plugs, then order him to fire the 20mm into the sea aft of the boat
then rush down the boat and dive dive dive:arrgh!:

Actually, I don't see the downside of extending the periscope while Bernard is in position, if you see what I mean:o

Go to the very first post on the "Humorous Screenshots" thread. Bernard was a random name picked by Dowly for a sailor doing something dumb. The name stuck, and he's now the catch-all whipping boy when things go wrong.

This does not seem to be a very comfortable position and I can imagine the strain on the periscope shaft.

I guess a guy with a good pair of binocs can see better than just using the observation periscope.

Or was this just something the crew did to the new guy on his first cruise.

"no really, you have to climb up the periscope shaft" LoL
