Default Hit by shell, destroyed by secondary explosion?

I was somewhere in the Carribean when I spotted a medium tanker. It was moving fast, and it going to be hard to flank it and get into firing position without being seen. Since it was a clear day, I decided to chase it down and destroy it with my deck gun. As I approached, the tanker opened up on me with a rear gun. As usual, the shots were all over the place and I wasn't worried. But he was moving fast, and I was gaining slowly, so he got a _lot_ of shots in. Finally, one hit. With a terrible surprise, there was a BAM, fire on my screen and the sound of men screaming in pain. A shell had hit the conning tower. As the fire left my screen I had that sinking feeling - when you've taken a foolish risk and been burned. I switched to F7 to check the damage. Watch tower crew was dead. Wait - what's that - suddenly the control room team is dead. A second later, the crew in the radio room and crew quarters are dead. My boat is lost! I don't know exactly what happened, but I suspect that the shell hit the tower, killed those crew, then caused a secondary explosion much like you often see when you shell enemy ships. The secondary explosion killed the control room crew, and then spread through the boat to each end like a rolling fireball. Burn. I didn't know that enemy shells could cause your boat to brew up like that. In the future I'm going to be _way_ more careful around enemy guns.
