First Task force encounter

Jan/2/42

1700hrs Lookout locates smoke on horizon 45 degrees off port bow. I move to the coning tower for a look, change from Binos to UZO's and DAMN Destroyer, Decks awash, ahead 1/3. Identify Destroyer as J&K class.

Preparing to dive when starboard lookout calls Ship spotted, Next lookout also calls ship spotted.

Pick up binos look ahead port, comming out of the mist at long range, four more smoke plumes.

Sweat on brow, is it a convoy, ahead slow, change to UZO's watching Destroyer at my 9 and smoke stacks at 12.

getting closer, periscope depth, zoom in, thats no convoy,

90 degrees port, tubes 2 and 3, depth 3m fast impact, select farthest Revenge battleship, fire tubes. DAMN spread angle is still at 5.

Select tubes 1 and 4, depth 3m, fast - impact,spread 0, select nearest BS....fire tubes.

Torpedoes strike 2nd Battleship forward and gun bay

Turn about 180 dive to 160 and sneak away with DC's going off well to the rear.

Surface after 2 hours to recharge and have a cigar with the sunset

On the patrol of my first TF encounter was also the patrol of my 2nd and 3rd TF encounter it also was my 1st patrol in the med which seemed to fit in perfectly. My first patrol with TF's 7 warships sunk including 1 BB. Keep it up in the med you will get total craploads of TF's going by.

Had a double dilemma while playing last night. Convoy was reported not too far from my position so I went zipping towards it at flank speed. About 50km from my estimated ambush point my lookouts spotted warships on a perpindicular course to the convoy. Taskforce!!! What to do?
I decided that the Fatherland could best be served by cutting off the supply of cocoa beans and pipe tobacco from the New World and given that I was on a first patrol with a new crew (again) carried on for the convoy.
Big mistake. I died Stupid convoy changed course towards me at about 1000m and I went from being ahead and on the port side to just being ahead. Made the mistake of firing a snap salvo(which all missed) alerted the escorts and then crash dived without checking the depth Suffered damage and what sounded like the compressor hissing at max volume. Not very stealthy and crew wouldn't repair anything. Escorts must have thought it was xmas. Another new patrol tonight I guess

Ah another SHII rethread!
I miss a lot of good things SHII had, like being able to determine (almost) exactly what the depth of water was at a specific spot without having to go there. I also miss the jolly voice saying, "Baterien vol geladen." Umm, where those the days?
