Default How close to death have you been?

I was just fartin around with SH3 yesterday and loaded the training convoy mission. I took out the lead Hunt DD and the C2. I surfaced to go head-to-head with the armed trawler. That wasn't such a good idea. GWX turns off the Hull Integrity stat, but I turned it back on. I lost three sailors and two were wounded. I had a whopping 3% health left after that encouter. I just used my deck gun on the armed trawler. After taking him out, I gunned down the remaining merchants. After that I made a beeline towards Kiel. Here are a few shots of the aftermath.

You got some issues there bud. Look at the brightside, if you make it back to port the months it will take to repair.....man good times to be had for a long time

You do look like a holy mackerel.
I had an encounter with an armed tug West of Scotland. It killed two of my men before we cleared the decks and dived. Had 17% hull integrety on return to Willi.

Those armed tugs are bastards!

I wasn't even paying attention to my hull integrity during the battle. When I finally noticed it, I steered away at flank speed. I had disabled him and his main armament, but not the smaller guns. Lucky for me, I had put enough holes into him that he sank a bit after I got out of his smaller gun range.

Ah, it´s time for my Valletta story again. :rotfl:

Cant remember the details too good anymore, but here it goes:

WaW patrol, Adolf Bummer Jr. (or II), with having a poor patrol I messaged BdU and asked permission to go and photograph the port of Valletta in Malta island. BdU granted the permission and off I went. To cut the story short, it was stormy weather, I was 2km from the port when I was detected by the port DD´s (5 DDs & 1 Torpedo boat). The water was very shallow, ~25 meters. I went full speed ahead while I was DC´d by almost 180 charges in total. It took 1½ hours realtime to reach the deeper waters that were ~100km away from the port.

Results: Heavy flooding, 2 crewmen dead, periscopes destroyed and some other minor things I can remember atm. But I gotta say, that has been the only time I was really afraid while playing SHIII, my hands shook everytime a DC exploded nearby.

This was played out on GW 1.1. Copied from my SH3 Commander Personnel File:

Patrol Dates Ships Sunk (Merchant/Warship) Tonnage (Merchant/Warship) Comments
6 31AUG40 - 10SEP40 (11 days) 5 (1/4) 20625 (6450/14175) U-Boat damaged (H.I. 1.01%)

Yes, that's right. 1% integrity. It was a while ago but I recall it being a convoy defended by a few cruisers and tons of smaller escorts i.e. corvettes and frigates. Something possessed me to surface and man the guns for most of the engagement

In keeping with the spirit of realism, once I returned to base I declared my trusty U-54 "written off" and purchased a new submarine.

I've gotten quite liberal with assigning repair qualifications, so I'm pretty good at plugging the holes. Our boat was held together with duct tape; my boys made me proud that day. All hands were lost four patrols later War is hell.
