I'm ~ 6 months into the war in a type VIIB. All going well, put 4 fish into a large cargo (wanted to be sure) and hit a tramp steamer with aft torp and got her right in the back end so she was dead stop.
Decided to dive to 100 m to avoid escorts. 100m is the yellow line. Then decided to go 110 m. But for some reason, the sub ascended and would not go to 110m. I hit the D key and she dove. I then hit 110 m on the depth meter and she started to ascend again. Bow planes on the bridge instrument were full dive position. At this point, I was ready to surface anyway and finish off the tramp steamer so I didn't hang around to experiment. I haven't upgraded to 1.02 yet as I'm still out on patrol. Anyone else have this happen? |

What speed were you going? The natural tendancy at "slow ahead" is for the sub to rise. The only way to counter it is to go faster. This is for GWX though.

If you have a speed of less than 3 kts. the sub will rise 2 meters above the ordered depth (in GWX). Otherwise it will maintain that depth even with all engines stop. Speaking of speed, escorts will detect you at anything over 2 kts. Hope your problem is just a temporary glitch

Fortunatelly, managed to evade the destroyer and a frigate on this depth after some time, surfaced and finished off the merchant I damaged when it got too far behind of the rest of the convoy. The escort was some 8 kms away but still managed to fire at me while I was illuminated by the merchant. After the lights were destroyed as well as the ship, I managed to slip away in the dark again without being spotted by the speeding destroyer.

I was going slow, maybe 2 or 3 knots. So you have to go > 3 knots to go below 100m? That doesn't sound like a good idea when you are trying to avoid a tin can. I'll have to check out the manual see if I can find what you refer.

I think the behaviour that jimbuna is referring to is this:
If you have damage and have water coming in, you will be restricted to shallower depths. Why? Water pressure. Water pressure increases with depth. If you have a little bit of water coming in at 50m, you will have a lot of water coming in at 150m. So you have to get creative and really work the damage control crew. Also, as I found out a few days ago, if you are using SH3Commander and have malfunctions turned on, one of the possible results is "diving inefficiency". Good luck!
