2nd Patrol with my IXC – U 162. We left Lorient at Nov. 16th 1941 for the grid DH 63. On the tour around Spain and Portugal we caught a small freighter and a C2. Both were sunk with the gun, disabling the armament of the C2 took about 20 rounds but when the gun was disabled it took only one further round to blow up the freighter.
At the southern tip of Portugal 8 Hurris caught up with us. 7 went down, the eighth fled smoking. After that the sea roughened, the use of guns was no longer possible. Just south of Gibraltar at 09 pm my lookouts reported a warship sighted. I had a closer look, Hunt-class, and dived to periscope depth, thinking it might be the front guard of something. Well it was something; sonar reported multiple warships heading for my position. Periscope up, the Escort would pass me at approx. 1 klick distance. Since it was running straight, it was centred at the formations centre, so I decided to move closer. Watching nervously for any signs of being spotted, I brought the engines up to full ahead. I looked at the area behind the escort for the approaching formation. I saw them at last: 3 columns, the western consisted of two Nelsons, the central of a Revenge and an Illustrious, the eastern of destroyers, all at a straight southern heading. I cut the speed back to slow, turned to 320 deg. for getting myself between the western and the central column. When the leading escort passed me at 400 metres I turned for 270 deg. and made my torpedo settings. The shooting had to be made from the hip; I didn’t dare to raise my periscope over a longer time. The leading Nelson was my first target; it got a fast 1°double-spread for impact. Second the Revenge, a fast keel runner was reserved for this buddy. After the impacts at the Nelson the time in hiding was over, I set speed for ahead and the heading for 180°. The first Nelson blew up apparently hit in the fuel bunker, the keel runner exploded just forward of the stack. At the first glance no damage, but later the Revenge had stopped. While turning, I fired a fast impact at the Illustrious with little hope for hitting anything. When the 190 deg. running went through, the second Nelson run over me with only little damage to the flak guns. Just when the periscope was clear, I saw the Illustrious blow up, it seemed to be my lucky patrol. I set one forward torp for keel runner and fired it at the Nelson and hit it below the stack. It slowed instantly a second torp finished it. While firing the sec. torp. sonar announced that we were detected. All ahead flank, 120 metres, hard board. The first charges dropped when I had reached 30 metres, missing by a cat’s hair. 50 metres running through second drop, missing wide. Just for making sure, I set for silent running and the depth at 180. Soon the destroyers dropped in wide patterns, not getting a clear fix at my position, thanks for Alberich. After an hour the destroyers resumed their former heading and left the area. I got up to periscope depth, finding the Revenge in 2 klicks distance with still no speed. It took 3 torps to finish her up. After surfacing I went to my patrol grid, stayed there for 24 hours and went back to Lorient without any further enemy contact. 9 torps, 30 granates and about 300 rounds fired for 126.000+ tons of shipping and 7 fighters. The mission was done at 100% difficulty. Sorry for missing pics but each time I take em, the game gets a picutre show. |
