GW Kapselgeblase

After completing the 8th. patrol with U-49 (type VIIB) I see I can upgrade the engines with a type of shaft driven supercharger.
A search revealed this information in a post;

Quote:
Name0=GWKapselgeblase
SpeedBoost0=1.1

Name1=MANBuchigeblase
SpeedBoost1=1.2
While that seems well and fine Im puzzled by what this upgrade will do to range / fuel-consumption (game mechanics). So, for you all that have used this upgrade whats your take? Seems like a logical upgrade but it never hurts to ask.
Thanx!

You can go faster which helps evading some escorts on the surface and catching up to convoys. Of course, there's a trade off, the faster you go the more fuel you burn.

It's a good upgrade; go for it. You won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't take it for two reasons.
1. You burn a lot more fuel, because all your speed settings are higher.
2. To my knowledge U-Boats didn't have such things; I've read a lot of books about U-Boats and neither the GW Kapselgebläse nor the MAN Buchigebläse were ever mentioned.

It has worked very well for me. For ordering speeds for cruising, I order it in knots instead of using the engine telegraph. It is a good, tangible improvement on the boat.

Thanks Seth, didn't know that. But when I have a look at her max. speed of about 15 knots the superchargers did not help her a lot.:p
Anyway, I'm not going to use that stuff, I'm oldschool!:p:rotfl:

IIRC Sailor Steve undertook some research on sub engines and concluded that the original engine/equipment was closer to what they had in reality :hmm:

Yes. The engines came with the superchargers already installed, and so the un-upgraded max speed in SH3 is what the real life boats could do with the supercharged engines. I never take them, precisely for this reason.

II and VIIa didn't have them. VIIb and all later boats came with them. Max speeds for all boats are shown here: http://www.uboat.net/types/index.html

Interesting posts & links.

Superchargers also seem like a love/hate option with some players. So if by accuracy the VIIB's engines came with Kapselgeblase then why would the game make it an upgrade option unless it's just something to chew renown. :hmm:

Then it should be modded, so that with the addon you have for example 1 knot more speed?

It should be modelled that without the addon you have less speed

Then it becomes unrealistic
