anyone else have some cool moments in gwx that surprised you?

for example, in november 41 i was off the coast of africa near freetown and my watch crew spotted a DD through the fog. so i creeped closer and saw it was an american DD escorting 3 large ships through the fog. i shadowed them for a bit and got closer and noticed 2 were american and the middle ship (liner transport) was a british ship. i set up for a shot but an american ship got in the way. then the escort swung around and noticed me. she came steaming full speed at me so i decided to call the attack off and dive. after no depth charging i came up to PD and noticed her throwing star shells up and the convoy changing course while the dd was protecting its rear. very cool. good work gwx guys.

My moment must be a convoy attack off the coast of Ireland in 1940. It was night and the sea was totally calm and clear. I spotted a convoy about 20Km ahead. Instantly I went to decks awash and ahead flank, while I set a course perpendicular to the convoy's. I've managed to manoeuvre my boat through the escorts (two armed trawlers and one DD) and I was racing towards the convoy at 15kts trying to close the distance. Those minutes when I was moving at high speed passing the unsuspected escorts seemed hours to me. In any case I've fired four torpedoes at three targets from 4Km away and I've started reloading. Once I was ready I fired four more torpedoes and I dived deep using Silent Running. Once the first torpedo hit it's target all hell broke loose. Thankfully and with a bit of luck I avoided the escorts and turned away from the convoy. In the end I sunk two Pyros One Small Merchant and a Tramp Steamer. Not bad

Reached the patrol zone, nothing special. I sank the first two on a trip to Malta, stern shots, hauling my surfaced behind OUT OF THERE. Bad idea! :rotfl:Two of their friends were still chasing me when the Italians/Luftwaffe started bombing Malta. And them for that matter

Well, the HMS Whirlwind... escorting a large merchant. I take a shot at both, I miss. She DC'ed me pretty good. Until thankfully, SOMEONE heard my radio report and it got hit from the skies. She lost her rear batteries and depth charge launchers. HA! No wait.

MY batteries were intact, but not that happy... the merchant sailed away. I played this game since it hit the shops, I've been to the Caribean and back, seen New York. This dog wouldn't let go No way to reach Tunis submerged. This boat is bugged, this is personal, but she can't depthcharge me anymore Too much daylight still and planes above.

The night before I was to sail into Tunis I surface when she runs over me and hit a few shells. I take damage too. Lost my first watch officer. But, the deck gun still fires!

It would appear I finally have her. She starts to sink at the bow, losing speed rapidly.I come up behind her, deck gun blazing and seeing my quickly fired eels bounce of her rear or miss...

I lose some more men to machinegun fire and, eventually, my second watch officer. The conning tower is toast, hull integrity at 12%, light flooding.

Men down on deck... the Whirlwind explodes and sinks.

U97 met no other ships or planes until an Italian schnellboat was spotted near Tunis...

There were no burials at sea. I brought them back

U-49 (Type VIIB). On present patrol, 20 May 1940. Position, 40 miles west of Pentland Fyrth.

Positioned boat to intercept convoy. Weather: Rough seas, thunderstorms, rain. Visibility 300 meters. Hydrophone reports at least 4 escorts. Convoy in tight formation steaming at 8 kts. Having underestimated convoy speed, I'm in the middle of it, going in the opposite direction. A small freighter bears on us less than 200 meters away. Down scope, let him pass. Up scope. Freighter/passenger almost on top of us. Down scope.

Up scope. Large freighter. I fire a torpedo at it. Down scope, torpedo misses. Freighter hits conning tower. Open stern tube door, switch pistol to magnetic, depth 9 meters. Up observation scope, which is already aiming at 180 degrees. Target is 200 meters away, vanishing in the fog.

Fire!
Torpedo explosion. escorts all around us, but can't see them. The convoy has passed. We dive to 140 meters expecting a hammering. Nothing happens.

Good thing I marked the spot where we dove deep. When sure no escorts were around, back to PD. Following the convoy's heading I search left and right. Got a glimpse of a shadow. Changed course, sure enough, the big freighter sat there not moving. Maneuvered around and let it have an impact torpedo--it sank an hour later. 11,000 tons.

I experienced this in WaW a few days ago:

I was attacking a Red convoy up around the Arctic. PQ convoy route, I believe. I was submerged and the wind was HOWLING out of the north. A big ol' liberty cargo came up out of the fog listing heavily to port (cuz of the wind, I imagine). I had never seen a liberty cargo before in GWX...wow, the detail was amazing especially as it loomed out of the fog and fighting through the breakers like that. Drooling, I slammed 4 fish into her at 88 degrees AOB and from about 1200 meters away. Then I went deep fast. She broke up and went down and the escorts must have had more trouble than usual trying to find me because of the weather which allowed me to slip away. Uber cool.

I had a cool Das Boot like moment on the WaW training mission too. A Swordfish was trying to strafe a little German tug, so I cranked the AA Gun around and shot it down, only to be soaked by a shell splash from an approaching Armed Trawler


All I can say is: "ALAAARM!"

Not Bad for a Dugout Canoe...
Found The Passenger Liner on the Prior Patrol, Docked in Poti on the coast of the Black Sea. Fired two eels at her, not realizing that she was on the opposite side of a levy.. So, this patrol we came in from the other side and put two into her, she went down like a setting sun.

The Motor Vessel was a lone ship docked in an unprotected port north of Poti, she made good target practice for the Flak gunner, and a powerful show of force to Germany's Red northern Neighbor.

The Heavy Transport was plucked like a ripened peach from a small convoy.

The Tanker is one of two docked small tankers we fired upon in another poorly protected russian port. these two used the last of the 6 torpedoes, The ship sunk was parked 90 degrees across our heading, and the other was a bow shot. Both Torps ran true, but the second bar maid had luck with her that night.
