Default SH3 noob...a few questions

Hello,

Just bought SH3 and I want to get into as much realism as I can. I've been going through some of the forum threads, but information seems to be out of date and/or scattered. So, I was hoping somebody could help me with a few things.

1 - What are the best mods for me to use? Is there a particular set that is recommended? (I'm looking for the most realism possible. Also, I have installed GWX3.)

2 - The SH3 Community Manual site is dead. I've been looking around for tutorials and such, but there's no one central place for tutorials. Can anybody recommend some (right now, just looking for navigation and such).

Both of these question kind of relate to one another. For example, I've been looking at Wazoo's torpedo tutorial, but it uses a simplified way to get range/course on a ship (i.e. you don't have to use the attack periscope's the dials around the viewer...don't know what those are called). I don't even have those dials (man, wish I knew their names), so I must be missing a mod. And once I get that mod, is there a tutorial for using it?

Thanks,

Ryan

PS - Been to http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96026, but a few things seem to be out of date.

WELCOME ABOARD!

As for what mods are the best, every one of the thousands of players will tell you something different. There are four different supermods, all good and all popular, and dozens if not hundreds of mods that work with some or all of them.

That said, GWX is the most popular, and most agree the most rounded of the lot, giving a good balance of graphics, sounds and gameplay. If you make that your choice, your next stop should be this thread:

Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately I've downloaded my limit from subsim today, so I'll have to wait until tmrw. No matter, as something got screwed up somewhere (after SH3C3.2 was installed, the sky became black no matter what time of day it was, which was kind of interesting), so I'm reinstalling everything (which means redownloading because I bought the game via Ubisoft uplay...bleh).

Next time just make a backup copy of your game directory with GWX installed when it's stable and running. If you screw up next time, you won't have to re-download the game again.

Also, make sure to follow SH3Cmdr installation guidelines!

About "most realism possible", depends on what you mean by that, really. 'Cause you know, there's:
- "tactical realism" - fully manual targeting by means of getting all the targeting data yourself, speed, distance, AoB, etc. There are mods that add "Rings o' Confusion" or AoB calculators and other tools.
- "hardcore realism" - all of the "tactical" stuff above + manual navigation by the use of sextant and stars/sun (...and a useful Python script - search for "real navigation" here at subsim)

- "realism realism" - you know, as a captain you delegate most of the stuff and take care of the "high level" decisions and some of targeting... So.

I myself play on "tactical realism" level, where I like to calculate solutions on my own, using tools like "Rings o' Confusion" and stuff, and leave navigation to my officers. But maybe one day I'll try real navigation, as it sounds tempting. I imagine finally taking my boat there-and-back safely AND by means of manual navigation, and you know, finding actual way home... Sounds like doing something like this would be incredibly satisfying in the end. But I'm still way too set in my noobish ways.

This is usually caused by having a Scene.act file that doesn't match the Sky and Sea files. The first thing to try is a rollback on SH3 Commander. Unless you are creating mods it's usually best to have Commander set for 'Auto Rollback'.

I was late to this game as well and tried to put a couple of dead links into threads here. Here is part of the community manual:
