Default Water Artifacts

Hey Everyone,

Have not played a sub sim since Wolf Pack back in 1990, and decided to give it a go again after watching Das Boot. Picked up SH5, played it vanilla, wasn't too impressed with it. After watching the first few videos in Shaefer's excellent lets play I decided I had to try again with with mods in place and realistically. At this point, all my mods seem to work, but there is a slight graphical issue I am dealing with. Take a look at this video:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0By2A...hrVW9WOGc/edit

It's hard to see in the video, unless it is moving, but there are these white pixels that flash on and off on the water. It's something I would expect to see if my video card was overheating due to overclocking. The thing is, it is very evident on my screen, but I can hardly notice it in the recording I made. I have never seen it in any of Shaefer's let's plays, or any of the screenshots on the forums. I'm a bit puzzled.

So my question is, does anyone else see them? If so, are they to be expected, or can I get rid of them? If they are supposed to be there, I'll live with it, but I want my game to look like what I see in other people's videos.

Some facts:
1. The issue is not present when the game is installed and on patch 1.2.
2. The issue is not present after using the generic patcher.
3. The issue is present when I load my MEP.
4. That leads me to believe it is a mod.
5. I have tried modifying my MEP multiple times with uninstalls/reinstalls to see if I can figure out which mod it is, but I have not had any luck there. Also, it's very time consuming to do that.
6. I removed this specific mod:
DynEnv v2.9 - 5.c Ambient Settings - Darker Nights-No Murky Waters
After doing that, the water is no longer blue, and the dots are not quite as noticeable. They are still there though.

Here is my current MEP list:

Try to remove "sobers waves mod V30 SH5" ...If this removes those pixel flashes we can than try to edit some waves parameters manually in order to maintain Sober's waves mechanics but with less sharpens or reflection...
Or you can simply find some other waves mod or use default ...

Sounds like your vid card is out of mem and some mods are very heavy on the graphics. There have been a few threads talking about this issue.

So remove the graphics mods and you should be ok

i.e.
SteelViking's Interior Mod V1.2
SteelViking's Interior Mod V1.2.2 Patch

I'll try removing that wave mod after work today.

I'll give that a shot as well. I have 3GB of video memory on this card. I wouldn't think I'd be out. Is there a utility to tell how much I am using while in SH5?

Thanks,

Everlazy

I just watched your vid and it is hard to see

The white pixels do look like a wave issue
If it was your vid card the white outs would be much bigger

For me it was the wave mod that gave this effect

I could be wrong as i've not checked inside the data folder, but i'd guess the wave mod contains something like light reflections (forget exact name)

If you want a good wave mod, check through the Dynamic Environment thread and see how to install Dynamic Environment - Wave Mechanics.

I'm personally using Wave Mechanics Gale (Improved) which I can't remember if it's in the main Dynamic Environment mod or a seperate download. I'd recommend this one, although obviously personal tastes differ.

If I remember right the main mod contains three wave mechanics option (Breeze, Gale and Hurricane) which if I understand it correctly directly effects not only the look of the waves but their height as well.

Well worth a look.

Hey Jester,

Thanks for the tip. Do you know if I need to use both the gale and gale improved together, or can I just load gale improved?

Only use one of the options at a time. I would suggest you try the Breeze and Hurricane versions as well at some stage, just to see if they better suit your personal taste.
