Default Awesome Airplanes!

I was just watching some very cool low passes, and not knowing where to share them I thought I'd make a new thread that can either thrive or die. It doesn't matter which, it's just a couple of breathtaking sights that are usually only seen by those who can attend airshows.

Turn your sound up!

DC-10.

DC-3.

Merlins!

Hurricane.

P-40Es (Allison V-12)

FW-190

Me-262

I can only second this.

One of my favourite videos:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72...had_shortfilms

Some fantastic flying there.

Love that DC-3 engine sound, Steve, always gives me the chills.

Loving the 'Merlins' too, I presume the footage is computer? Either way, it's still lovely.

Can't go having the Butcher Bird without her little sister:

DB-605 music:

You can't beat a good Merlin, but I've grown, through years of playing IL2 with the Lolwaffles, to really love the DB-601 and 605 engine noise, that whistle! It's got a charm all of its own.

And, something that would bring joy to many a wounded GIs ears:

Huey:

Although I do love the deep thud of the Chinook:

Good stuff.

And lastly, one for Jim and Herr B:

Not a chance of hell of a Vulcan sneaking up on anyone, that's for sure.

Chinook gets owned by the Russians - literally!

We can argue about which was the best of the first-generation heavy jet bombers, but there is no doubt about which one was the prettiest.

Here's a nice video I found from inside a Huey doing a lovely approach and landing.

I think since the release of DCS:Huey, a lot of people are starting to realise just how much skill the pilots need to fly them.

Beautiful!

Regarding skill, Lou Drendel, in one of his books on the Huey, describes going for a lengthy ride in one. He mention the fact that unlike a standard aircraft, the helicopter is inherently unstable and requires that the pilot keep his hands on both sticks at all times. This means he can never relax, even for a few seconds. That takes a lot of stamina and mental exertion as well.

I can remember riding on a huey, "sitting in the door" as they say, and watching 4 other hueys that were abreast of us. We were all moving along at a very good rate of speed, and I was stunned at how the other 4 were constantly up, down, up, down, etc, not holding altitude well at all.

Later on the ground I commented about that, asking if their pilots were sober. (joking) Thing is, they were looking at me seeing the same thing. Its just that in the one you are riding on, you don't feel it or notice it.
