US-Mexico gun-running 'misguided'

The US justice department has cited 14 people for possible disciplinary action for their roles in a botched gun-running operation.

Operation Fast and Furious saw US agents lose track of hundreds of illegal guns sold in Arizona and allowed into Mexico to target dealers.The http://www.justice.gov/oig/reports/2012/s1209.pdf comes after a 19-month review.Attorney General Eric Holder was not criticised, as no evidence was found he knew about the controversial tactics.

Mr Holder was held in contempt of Congress in June for not handing over documents related to the operation.

Two of the illegal weapons were found in December 2010 at the scene of a US border agent's murder. Fast and Furious ended in early 2011.

Good, it was a poorly designed (high risk, low benefit), poorly run operation.

You don't just evaluate an OP on the benefits if it succeeds, but also on the risks if it fails.

An internal investigation clears the department head of wrongdoing. It's all very convenient. Big operations like that shouldn't be able to go on without the AG's knowledge and while I find it difficult to believe Holder really didn't know his lack of supervision at least shows that he is dangerously incompetent.

It seems like it has been quite a while since we have had a competent AG in this country. The past few administrations all seem to make it a political hack position.
