Frau Kaleun left him in charge of an oil spill clean-up, in Danmark.
Following completion of the task, he moved across the Kattegat and read about the war in swedish newspapers.

Wait a minute... Bernard deserted to Sweden and Germany still lost? And Sweden is still in one piece? The latter seems especially unlikely...
