I cant let go of my external camera (i love the screenshots).
U 53 (VIIB) . Lets see how this goes. The first one ended in 1940, minefield out of Hegoland returning from a mission of 50k tons... Sometimes i wish i teleported myself back home - a common practice amongst real Uboat commanders in the 1940's ![]()

You can tweak a CFG file and have up to 99% realism whilst having as much or little enabled as you want.

Fish, I will always say to play the game your way, as it has no affect on us.
But, that being said, there is a general consensus that there should be about a minimum level of realism. And it's not much, jsut a few options up from stock is all that people want to see. Fuel, Batteries, Air, are probably the minimum people want others to use. Any more and it becomes nit picking. But when people start changing the game so it performs outside of realistic expectations, ie 300 knots submerged, changing sound files so destroyers can't hear you, etc, That's when most people start turning the cold shoulder. |

Realism means different things to different people. In regards to SH3 being an experience that accurately portrays reality then I'd have to say (with no offence intended to anyone) that even with the best mods it falls way short. It's just a videogame, play it the way you want.

![]() ![]() "Realism" is a 19th-century art term meaning "reflecting reality". It can never be real, and ultimately the realism is all in your head.

As King_Zog said, in the final analysis it's a video game, so it should ultimately be about having fun. That being said, the sim fan in me doesn't want to convert it into an arcade game, as (IMO) you lose too much of what makes it enjoyable/special. I think the main reason I even raised the issue is that there seems to be the odd character lurking about who tends to look down on other folks for not playing it as "realistically" as they do. This strikes me as rather ridiculous, (particularly when you happen to get side-swiped by one of them) but I suppose it's bound to go with the territory. So putting the odd ogre aside, I do appreciate the comments in this thread as it provides assurance they are definitely in the minority. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! ![]() |

Personally, I put the realism at 100% (after configuring the setting values), just so I'm not tempted to teleport back home, for three reasons: 1) real crews never had that luxury, and puttering around the ocean being bored took up the majority of their patrols; 2) when I just teleport back to port, I don't have the same sense of accomplishment that I do when I stick it out through the entire patrol; 3) since I can't teleport, the chances of me seeing a ship on the return trip are 100% higher than they would be otherwise
![]() This is just me though, and after a while it does get tiresome. Then I just remind myself that I'm compressing weeks, or even months, of misery and boredom (and some terror) into two or three hours of staring at a computer screen. Those guys must've been absolutely batsh!te insane when they returned to port ![]() ![]()

But two and three are true for me as well, and I only use the Teleport if that situation arises (to date it never has). As for the boredom, I take my patrols in little stages, a patrol week or so at a time. One whole session is usually reseved for the trip home.
