I would have to go with the Type IXB, as i play unlimited fuel, limited batteries. Though, if i use the XXI in '39 mod i use the opposite.

I wish I could have a IXA out of Wilhelmshaven right at the start of the war. But I can't, and I've never played far enough into the war to get a IXB.

So I guess I'm no help at all.

Good question, I've always upgraded my boats, never stuck with one to the end, I can say I don't bother with the IXC/40 just strikes me a economical fuel boat. I must say, I do like taking the IXD2 down under, less planes buzzing around.

Statistically, and due to length of time available, I prefer the Type IX-B. The dive time is slightly faster than later models, and I actually like the lesser range that it has compared to the Type IX-C and onward. (Less distance to travel on my missions.) The greater surface speed, extra torpedoes, and extended range of the Type IX-D2 is great, but the draft is also greater, and the dive times noticeably slower.

(At least according to the game manual. For all I know the GWX mod has changed this.)

The IXB is my preferred one if I decide to use one. The dive time is decent, the IXD2 in comparison feels like it takes eternity for it to get to periscope depth and it handles just like it looks. The IXB isn't as nimble as a VII, but depending on which area I'm playing in have more torpedo's is more beneficial than agility.

IXB asap then IXD2 when available (longest range and most eels).

IXB - Just finished my war patrol with it after oodles of time in a II and VII. I had to keep looking in the torpedo room to be sure that I really did have more eels..

Yep, I'm biased..
