right basic info first,

The Specs
Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Gigabyte X58 UD7 Mobo
Intel i7 930 CPU
Nvidia 275 GFX (1892MB)
6GB corsair Ram
WD 1.5TB (64mb cache HDD x2)
X-Fi Elite Pro sound
and a Partridge in a pear tree

The Problem

I have the retail version of SH4 and U-Boat missions working fine on the system...but its not quite as immersive as SH3 imo...sooo
i also have the full retail Cd of SH3, Installed SH3..started it but get the error message " requires windows 98 ect ect" hmm, ok,, much head scratching and googling pointed to the dreaded "Starforce problems" (surely not )..then found that steam also had the game, and for only £3.99, aha, so bought it of steam and off it went on the system with no problems at all (Conclusion..bloody stupid Starforce for the CD version), anyway feeling very happy now that sh3 was working i installed "U-Boat battle of the Mediterranean" and that installed fine into the folder that Steam had made for it, however it does not work, there is no starting base at "Salamis" in 42 or 43, only the standard 29th flot from 42...grrrr..

Now i see that you have a lovely link to a "Starfarce erm force" free DVD linked on your brilliant site here,

NOTE: You can still buy the SH3 Gold edition with all the proper patches and Starforce free for $9.99 from the Subsim Store here. It also includes a free copy of Silent Hunter II, the first of the U-boat Silent Hunters.

yippee..BUT it also says "we cannot dispatch this item to your current location ( UK) ..

so my question is this
I have tried everything i can legally think of at this stage so please can someone help, amazon UK has no listing for this starforce free version, ebay has loads of items but non stataing its free of that thing (i dont want to mention its name to much in case it mutates)..i would even pay for it via the donate button on the page here together with postage and a bit extra for the trouble (up front).

Its not an addictive series of games you understand (apart from SH5), its just i need to play it.

You said you got SH3 to work by buying it from Steam. I did the same thing by re-buying it from Direct2Drive.

Is "U-Boat battle of the Mediterranean" a mod or something?

Its a add-on by X1 software mission and campaign expansion for SH3,

Thanks for that Steve, it said full game at direct2drive, so i thought why not, and it works (steam must miss something out) ...installed u-boat and thats working as well now..thank you very much , i am going to give a small donation now to this site for the help,

You can't get the twin pack in the UK, but you can get to Amazon UK via http://www.subsim.com/store.html (so this site gets some 6.5% of purchase price to keep running - very important) and buy the Focus Multimedia edition of SH3 with is starforce free and patched to 1.4b.

Maybe Onkel Neal should buy a job lot of the twin-pack and flog it on ebay to Europe

Here is an alternative version of SH3 (already patched to 1.4b, no StarForce and no cd needed in tray to play) as previously stated, if accessed via SubSim, Neal will get a small commission which goes toward maintaining this fantastic forum.

If your seriously considering GWX3.0, I would advice you get them from my FF account (link above my sig).

naughty of them to say the least, well i just donated $20 for the help and advise i recieved from here .

i have the GWX now but the game crashes again partway through the red load bar, so taken it off, at least i can play sh3 with the stolen (by X1) but donated towards (by me) U-Boat.

Click on my ig and follow the step by step installation instructions on the GWX website.

You are using a fresh/clean install aren't you?

What Jim said above. It sounds like you tried to install GWX on top of what you already had. It MUST be installed over a clean install of SH3 fully patched. Reinstall the Steam version if you can, but I would recommend the disc version from Amazon UK.

And stay away from that X1 crap, because that's just what it is. GWX will give you a lot more, better, newer stuff anyway.

While I don't want to rob Neal of his turnover, if you already have the game functioning well (without Starforce issues), why buy a new copy? Surely the dysfunction of the Mediterranean mod isn't caused by the star-force issue. I mean, highly unlikely.

Something must have gone wrong during mod enabling (probable with Windows 7 and the default install location in the Program Files folder), or the mod has bugs in that prevent the desired Flotilla to work. Assuming it is supposed to have that particular Flotilla (just guessing, never heard or seen the mod before myself) My suggestion is to first figure out the reason why the mod doesn't work as advertised.

[EDIT]: Just realised the mod is of questionable ethics. My point is not about using that Mediterranean mod, but about fixing the proper thing that is broken.)

Second: You can download GWX 3.0 Gold or NYGM supermods for free.
Both are much better than Mediterranean-Silent-Expansion.

Sorry you misunderstand , the steam version i bought worked fine yes, but the addonn did not, it installed but did not show, this was because steam does not put everything onto your computer, hence why it needs to connect to steam to run, the version from Direct2drive is the whole game that downloads and installs onto your system but needs no disc in the drive (starforce free), once that was done the add-on installed and worked without any problems, GSW is now working as well, and wow, nice, gives a whole new dimension to the game play.

As for windows 7, i have yet to find a game i cannot play, my system has railroad tycoon, Lemmings and worms running as well as loads of other old but good games, most of not all problems reported reference this OS are user error, and i have been running it since RC7100 eval copy (MCP Gold Partner), also had Vista but they did not listen to our warnings..ahh well.
ohh and before you ask, yes we make boo boo`s as well, hence why i asked for help with the program here, anybody who says they know everything about PC systems is deluded, its not just an OS but the way individual programs interact within that environment, that’s where you can come up against problems and crashes. GSX was a problem but nothing else, Starforce is an indigenous DRM program tattoo`d to a disc so was a big problem.

We have a software coder here in the clan i run, (BC2 - EvE - Arma 2 - COD4 and AA3) and if anybody steals his work they would find themselves in a court faster than a Comet streaking through the sky, had i known at the time that UBoat was a stolen work it would not have been bought, but i did not...nor i suspect did a lot of other buyers out there, i now know and have donated towards your costs here on this site to try and help put it right on my personal behalf.

As for the site here, well i can see that i am going to be spending a lot of time looking through all the goodies .
