There was nothing anyone could have done. The tugs diesels cut out and they didn't get them restarted in time. As a result the tug got caught on the starboard horizontal stabilizer and it tore a hole in the bottom of it. Like GR said it could have gone worse, only two drowned as a result. If I remember correctly I first learned of this incident in Sub School in Groton.

The tugboat went down super quick. Jeez Louise! That's quite the heart stopper, as internet video clips go. Did I see a guy fall into the submarine's wake and disappear just fore of the plane, or were my eyes playing a trick on me?
