There was nothing anyone could have done. The tugs diesels cut out and they didn't get them restarted in time. As a result the tug got caught on the starboard horizontal stabilizer and it tore a hole in the bottom of it. Like GR said it could have gone worse, only two drowned as a result. If I remember correctly I first learned of this incident in Sub School in Groton.

You say there wasn't anything that could have been done. Why didn't they go to back emergency on the starboard screw? That may have helped produce enough of a wash that it'd lifted the tug up and over.

More importantly, why the heck did they do a personnel transfer without being at dead stop?

US subs are single shaft.

The tug sank as a result of a very large hole being torn in its bottom. Look at how fast it sank in the video. There's no way you can lift a tug high enough to clear the stabilizers.

Security reasons. There's 24 nuclear missiles onboard. Even surface ships don't stop in the middle of the ocean when they're performing an UNREP.

The tugboat went down super quick. Jeez Louise! That's quite the heart stopper, as internet video clips go. Did I see a guy fall into the submarine's wake and disappear just fore of the plane, or were my eyes playing a trick on me?
