So, as the dust settles on what has been a very busy few days, let's step back and look objectively at where we are.
Thankfully, the modding side of Silent Hunter 5 looks to be very exciting. I had thought that DRM would doom any modding of the game, but that apparantly is not the case. I hope Ubisoft has its technical act together on that issue. The real issue, and the issue that inspired my 'Last Straw' post, remains though. That is the DRM. On a point of principle, I will not spend $50 on a game that I cannot play offline on my computer any time I choose to. So, I guess the question becomes, will Ubisoft ever really consider offering a patch that allows Silent Hunter 5 to be played offline? I can't see why they would, having gone to all the trouble of setting up this nonsense in the first place. So I guess that subsim and other similar forums are at a crossroads. Some of the members here will undoubtedly drift away, having decided not to buy the game. I'm sure we will be replaced by newbies though, who will scurry around the forum like excited new puppies. If online DRM is the future, it's a future I want no part of. I'll watch with interest over the coming months though to see how all this plays out. ![]() |
