Default It happens to the best of us.

first night back on patrol in about a month... about 3 days out of port i ran across a steamer heading northeast through the BF squares.

ID'd it carefully in the dark as the unsinkable passenger/cargo... closed in on it careful to ID the flag.

it was very dark and the flag was hard to see but i did take notice of the armament on her aft deck.

armed ship + in a war zone + darkened = fair game

wrong... showed up on the map as a neutral. I rushed in to ID the flag before it slipped under... but in a massive kaboom the whole thing slipped beneath the waves before i could catch a glimpse.

watch those flags guys.

Yes it happens.Last night i sunk to darkened ships that later show as neutrals. But thats what they deserve when you travel darkened in warzone.

To be honest with you I've altered the main renown thingy so that sinking neutrals doesn't count against me just for this such event.
If its lit like the proverbial X-mas tree then fine, But if its like your situation then I reckon its fair game,Especially if its 'Packing Heat'Love that phrase

This has nearly happened to me on several occasions, but I have yet to sink a neutral merchant. This is probably due to me being a cautious commander, and double checking a ships nationality. Although I did once "accidentally" torpedo a german merchant, fortunately it did not sink.

Well in the same career i also sank a german merchant. It was too dark to see even at extremly close range and it was darkened near norwegeian waters (while the invasion lasted). I thought it was possible to be friednly but it was reported as unknown merchant so i thought noone will report friendly without declaring it.Apprently i was wrong and deck gunned it to death.Few days later almost the same happened near scapa flow with another german merchant (another report) this time it was day and before i fire my torps i took extra time on the flag, and yes it was again friendly.
