Default Tweeking the boat?

Now I presume we are all familiar with the "Delta Renown" trick.

In the Patrols_0 file, there is listed

SubType=1
SubVersion=0
SubName=U-51

I am currently in a Mark 7 (VII). (21/3/40 is the current date)

I see that during this time there is also a Mark 9B (IXB) available.

Is there a way to change this? Can this be tweeked?

Or should I just bide my time?

Thanks in advance.

Personnaly, I like to stay as historically accurate as the game will allow. Some people tweak their boats and the game. It's all in your preferences and what gives you the most satisfaction.

If you wanna switch boats to test drive it or what not its easier all around to just add the renown needed and buy the boat ingame. Changing the configuration files directly can cause unpredictible behavior if you don't make all the necessary changes (which usually spans several files) in all the proper spots.

Let me just say this and I'll not bother to post in this thread again.

You know, it is 2008 and not 1940.

The game was made to make money and to enjoy. Which apparently, it has quite successfully done.

"As historically accurate as the game will allow," lets pause and look at that for a second.

I guess you always play the game on "Realistic."

I guess you always play the game with the "Time compression" turned off.

I guess then, it takes you what, a week to span the distance between Kiel and Grid AN 35?

So "as historically accurate as the game will allow," I guess it takes you about a month or longer to play one patrol in "real time?"

Geez man, don't take this crap so seriously.

You know, for all they did in the game, they left out a bunch of stuff.

How about the men on those merchant ships?

How about the number of times the U-Boat would pull along side the floating survivors and machine gun those treading water? Are you keeping it "historically accurate?"

How about those who were intentionally left in the water to become "shark bait?"

I was with the United States Marines in Panama and Grenada. War is hell! There is nothing to be made "glorious" about it. Its always one buttheads desire to have thy brothers land. And who gets caught in these situations? Innocent people!!

You guys take this stuff way, way to serious.

I guess I'm the only one who sees this for what it is: A Game!

I'm outta here, sorry to have troubled you guys.

Wow Sandman, I think your comments were a bit harsh there.

Brag just gave his opinion but made it pretty clear that " Some people tweak their boats and the game. It's all in your preferences and what gives you the most satisfaction."

I don't think he was intending on insulting you. As a single player game, you can play at what ever level of reality/fantasy you like. Your choice.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Sharks, in the North Atlantic? Now that would be unrealistic.

But seriously, the discussion about realistic simulation vs. arcade game is an old one; it's also still interesting to me. But a few people take it too far. Sandman ended up being the only one teling others how to play the game here ("don't take this crap so seriously").

It's a credit to all those that developed the game that it can be adjusted to suit different tastes and like no other sparks the interest of its players in the historical context. Hats off!

Subject-change: there seems to be only one recorded instance of german submariners machine-gunning survivors of a torpedoed ship. But it makes me think, were there other instances nobody found out about because they were so thoroughly done?

Let me apologize to one and all.

I did not want to sound bad in my comments.

If you want to keep it "real" fine, God Bless you.

But my whole point was just missed or glossed over.

In the sub room, under the question mark, it clearly shows the Type 9b (IXB) as available in 1939. In the stock version, even with the 1.4 patch, it is not available in either Kiel, where I chose to depart from, or Wilhamshaven.

My current "war date" is March 1940. So why isn't it available and if it is, how can tweeking effect gameplay?

Also, just for reference sake, two moths ago I had the honor of doing the eulogy of my Brother-in-Laws father. He was in the Army in WWII but because he already had 4 other brothers stationed abroad, he was put to service loading the docks in New York. He relates several stories of sailors who had their boats shot out from under them and left to feed the sharks, or some who had survived because they played "dead" to save their own skins.

Just because it isn't "documented" does not mean it didn't occur.

I have an uncle who was present December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. He was transfered to the Europian Theater shorty before the Normandy invasion. He was also present when the Allied troops began to liberate the Concentration Camps, no, the Death Camps. Germany to this day still denies this happened. They still insist that it was faked by the Allied armies.

Ask my uncle if it was "faked."

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1961 when he retired after 20 years service, then re-inlisted in the U.S.M.C. and went to Vietnam. When in 1965 he left because the Army would allow them to return fire when they were fired upon.

In WWI, the Axis U-Boats were "required" to notify any merchant ships that they were to be boarded, inspected, and consequently raided, but they mostly allowed the crew to evacuate before sinking the ship. That soon was abanded.

The same process insued in WWII.

Just because it wasn't documented, does not mean it didn't happen.

Ask any soldier what happened during the war, any war, and they can tell you stories that are not recorded or "documented."

Sorry to have upset the balance here fellows.

Right.....now that we're back on an even keel.

Apology accepted...Brag is an okay guy. Just don't tell him I said that.

If you stick around long enough I think you'll find this community to be very helpful and supportive.

Down to business:

It is a long time since I played stock, but what I can say categorically is that the Type IXB IS available from September 39 2nd Flotilla when using GWX2.0 (2.1 is currently in the making).

I believe most references to crews of vessels being attacked by sharks because of submarines lack of attention to their welfare 'post sinking' would be down to the Japanese (IJN)in the main........USS Indianapolis (CA-35) being a noteworthy example.

My own father, 84 year old and still with us, served in the British Merchant Navy through both the Spanish Civil and Second World War. He has often spoken of some of the atrocities he witnessed during this period.

Your correct when you make reference to the fact that not everything was documented or recorded (not for public consumption anyway).

It was however, documented and recorded in the minds of those who sacrificed so much to ensure the world was a safer place for their offspring.

I sincerely hope the equilibrium has been restored.

SINK EM ALL!!
