Oh it's also not very funny if you're in a VIIb, believe me, I was in that area a few days ago and it's very nerve-wracking....

But don't let that grinning devil BBW discourage you with his defeatist comments

a careful Kaleun can still operate successfully in that area, even in 1941, as long as he doesn't crashdive or submerge at all unless it's absolutley essential for survival...

also, require your entire crew to carry rabbit's feet, lucky coins, four-leaf clovers, and be sure to consult at least a few astrologers before leaving port...

Oh, and keep the liferaft inflated at all times and your tauchretter close to hand

its a safe bet that anywhere in the world where the water depth is less than 40 meters you WILL encounter mines in GWX2... not just around port cities... these mines are placed so they are sitting at a depth where they will explode due to contact or influence by submerged u-boats and not usually surface ships.

another argument for staying out of shallow waters.

so just be aware guys... if the water depth is 40 meters or less you can bet good money there are mines below you.

Well after seeing that map, I won't be having good sleeps for a couple of months.
Do you have any idea how many submerged attack's I've done on that area?

I'm new to the game, and have only gotten to early 1940. When is that minefield in place? Is the area between the black filled with mines, or just the black lines themselves? How do the Brits avoid their own mines?

Personally, I love hunting the North Sea with my Type VII. I know that deep water is your friend, but at this stage in the game it's not as critical as it will be later, so I'm taking advantage of the shallow-water targets and poor cover while I can.

Any advice on mines and minefields would be appreciated. On the plus side, I did recently (1939) make a night surface run through the Dover Straights, got attacked by a small patrol ship and something bigger, gunned the patrol ship (it withdrew) and outran/lost the bigger ship. Then I blasted a trio of big Frenchie merchants. Good times!

That's my thought exactly.... I couldn't believe it when I saw BBW's screenie of the campaign files for the first time, I figured I'd been very very lucky indeed

Predavolk, those lines indicate the area where you can be sure to find mines, they are all through the north sea though, to a certain degree, both sides mined extensively throughout the war.

suffice to say that the later in the war you get the thivker and bigger the minefields will be.

There were of course some mine-free lanes for the allies to move their ships through, but they mostly stayed very close to the coast, the Ferries from the Netherlands to Northern England still follow that route....
The Germans would abuse such minefree lanes if they found out about them by putting their own mines in them because that's where the shipping is going to be...

Mine warfare is a nasty business

Are they there throughout the war? I've spent a lot of time in Area 55 on that map, in the deeper water, submerged, and never encountered one (thankfully!). Is there a maximum depth? I heard 40M used before. Are you safe submerging in 41M+ water?

The mine pic is a mod by one of our modders. I just re-marked it in black for the pic.

I appologize for not giving credit to the author but I could not find the mod again.
