Default Magical ship-identifying scope - WTF?

Big apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere (and I think it must have been, but I couldn't find the thread) but what is with the uber-powerful UZO and periscopes that can 'see' and identify a target in pitch black?

Is this a known glitch? With so much realism it seems crazy to have the type of vessel at which the scope is pointing effortlessly identified in text, regardless (almost) of range or visibility.

I'm on 86% realism (event camera on, no dud torpedoes) and using a fresh install of SH3 -> 1.4b -> GWX2.0

No 'glitch'

The UZO was possibly the most powerful opticul piece of equipment on a sub....certainly for surface attacks.
Any glint of moon or starlight would aid in the process of identifying vessels.

Not every evening on the high seas was totally 'pitch black'.

Would you rather be fumbling about in the dark being able to see diddly squat and as consequence go crashing into everything in your close proximity ? :hmm:

We think we've struck a fine balance in the mod.....no doubt there'll be those who disagree, but there you are, the best that could be achieved considering the gameplay requirements of so many.

tim, do you mean the way that the ship type comes up on the notepad without you having to identify it?

If so, there are mods that fix it (the file in question is the one in the data/Roster folder if you want to DIY). My GUI fixes it but also contains a bunch of other stuff you may not want, so to just fix that one thing you can download the GUI (click the link in my sig) then take just the Roster files from it, and install only those. Hope this makes sense.

Guys, apologies for my lack of clarity.

OneLifeCrisis... yes, I was referring only to the text that pops up on the notepad. With so much realism in the rest of the sim. it feels painfully unrealistic (although it did help me to find a Troop Ship in Dover harbour in the middle of the night at over 3000kms behind a sea wall. ) Downloading your GUI files now, with many thanks.

Jimbuna... I think the balance of actual visibility in GWX2.0 is pretty much spot on. The overall balance of the mod in general is now *excellent*. The water is a smidgen too clear for my liking, but that's what SH3Commander is for, eh. But why did the GWX team decide to keep this uber-beady-eyed notebook feature in?

Many thanks indeed for your swift replies,

Tim

If you darken your room (maybe instal a red light so that you can see the keyboard). When you look through the UZO, you will see the target ship.

That makes sense, but isn't it a little far-fetched for the darkened shape to be instantly identified with a text description? :hmm:

Wouldn't selecting No Weapons Officer Assistance in your realism settings make it more like you want it? I manually select my torpedoes, speed (if selectable), running depth, pistol type and spread angle (if salvoed). I allow the WO assistance for I.D., range, speed and AOB, so I don't know if the No WO Assist would make the UZO or periscope more to the original poster's liking and it may still indicate that there's something out there. My old CRT monitor renders very dark black and there are overcast, moonless nights in which I have to wait for the odd brief flash of light (far away lightning?) to highlight ships' smoke at longer distances. Unless I put the crosshairs right on them, I often don't get any indication anything is there even after using the Lock button.

I have selected 'no assistance' from my Weapons Officer. :hmm:

What level are you playing at? Nothing ever gets identified for me unless I do it myself.

It has nothing to do with WE assistance.

Point your scope at an unidentified ship and look at the notepad and you'll see the problem.

This is a very old problem. See, for example:

I must admit, despite my thirst for realism I'm not in a rush to lose this facility following the success of last night's harbour raid.

How the hell I'm going to escape in 15 meters of water with the sun rising is another matter.
