Default IXB Deck Gun

Heya,

I just wanted to start a patrol with an IXB. After leaving Wilhelmshaven I noticed that my deck gun has no ammunition. After tracing back, I dont seem to be able to equip it either. What is this?

Yes, GWX with OLC.

Do you mean the shell icon in the weapons overview (hotkey "I")? Well, there is nothing I can do there. Or do you mean in the office/career screen? I don't see an option for equipping the deck gun except the deck gun itself ("You already have it!").

En route, If I press F10 it says 0 HE Ammunition on the lower right. And if I try to shoot it says "No more ammunition!". So how do I load this thing in the first place?

Man your deck gun, see the shell icon to your right, click it.

BTW, you will have to do that on all U-Boats.

You do not even need to load the first round on the deck gun in GWX.

Just have your watch officer order the crew to the gun.

Then again from the watch officer orders icons, tell your crew to open fire.

You can then also select targets via the binoculars or UZO using the space bar.

You don't have to ever leave the conning tower.

Ah, good to know. I didn't plan on using it, I was just rolling out and performing the standard chekcks of stations and operations.

From what I have heard the deck gun isn't necessarily effective anyway. But 39/40 It's still good to use? I started the career in September '39 with an IXB of the 2nd Flotilla in Wilhelmshaven (I know, I know... but my first GWX career is set up to be rather easy so I get the hang of things, especially the OLC way which is new to me).

Thanks for the insights, for now I am out heading NW into the Nordsee (sorry, patrol grid is confidential).

U23 out.

The deck gun can be useful, especially early in the war. It's just right for putting down that stubborn merchant, when you just know another eel will be overkill and a waste. Or for taking out smaller ships, like the odd tugboat and such. I just used mine last night (U-53, type IXB) in 11/1939 to get rid of an obnoxious little barfly of a schooner (17 tons, but it was just so pesky that I had to shoo it away) - nothing swats a bug like a 105mm round :p

Had exactly the same problem with my first GWX patrol, had a nice deckgun but seemingly without ammo. I couldn't sink a few ships because I had no ammo and sailed home when out of torps cursing the guys who designed a deckgun without ammuntion. On the second patrol I hadthe same issue until in pure frustration I clicked around and accidentally clicked the shell and seeing it loading itself.

About the deck gun, what happened to the star shell and armor piercing rounds we used to see? Also, when the gun is shooting it sounds like I'm hitting tennis balls? Something in the sound files?

Historically U-boats only carried HE shells and not the AP and Starshell (what did the starshell do besides lighting the scene??? They seem to have little effect on ships).

I was just wondering since they were available in the stock version and not now in GWX 2.0. Make sense from a historical perspective I guess, but was usefull when you ran out of ammo. Any thoughts about my sound problems?

That's exactly what the star shells were used for!

Cheers,
