Default Interesting reading - Friedman

I just got Friedman's two comprehensive books on the history of US subs pre/post-1945. (Yes, I ordered them through Subsim's Amazon Affiliate Program.)

I am finding the book really fascinating and particular worthwhile to see architecture of subs explained, but in an evolutionary fashion. I just got finished reading how hydroplanes solved the challenging problem of adjusting bouyancy.

I saw from reviews that some find these two books to technical. I guess the best way I can sum it up if you were the type of kid who loved to tear apart broken appliances and machines to see how they worked, then these books are for you. (Sad that for young people these days tearing apart stuff leads to nothing, but meaningless chips and circuit boards. That would have taken all the fun out of my youth!)

Well, if you don't have $90 USD to spend on these two books for your library, I recommend as a free resource:

http://www.hnsa.org/doc/fleetsub/index.htm

Full and detailed manuals of 40/50s era subs and their systems.

Happy reading!

Go to this page and search for "Great Books" and then scroll down a bit. (Don't know why, but they are not listed on Subsim's books page.)

And, I was in the bookstore earlier this week and saw that Polmar's excellent book on Cold War subs is now in paperback:

Cold War Submarines: The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines, 1945-2001 by Norman Polmar

Tarzan wants !

Gee only way for me to get these things is to buy them on the other side of the globe for absurd money, wait month or two till they come to me, just to find that the book is not what I thought it will be. Only good thing is dollar goes down ! :rotfl:

Well, check out the free link I posted. The material is very, very detailed - USN tech manuals and free and online. You could build your own kilo in your backyard with the level of detail included!

I you want it for interesting reading, I have the patrol reports in ASCII TXT from the Wahoo and the Tang. PM me an email address and I will mail them to you.

Lane - Check my site, I have a few scenarios based on Robinson's Kilo Class you might enjoy.

My error, Lane (getting old and the gray cells are tired) . I was thinking of my Sub Command "Kilo Class Trilogy", in which the Kilo is a target.

Kilo Class Trilogy

If you are ambitious, you might like to import these into DW, make the Kilo playable, and see if the scenarios are still interesting.
