Hello
I tried searching for this topic in the search engine but didn't anything. So here goes : Is there a way when I am submerged to find out if the weather is appropriate to use my deck gun or am I stuck surfacing and finding out for myself (losing the surprise effect) ? Thank you. |

I think you can't use the deck gun above Wind 7ms.
Once you know what 7ms waves look like you can easily tell by looking through the periscope. But until then it's either trial by error, or you have to ask your Watch Officer. But it's not like you have been submerged for a week either. Chances are the conditions on the surface are exactly like when you submerged. It can be dangerous just popping up close to a merchant for a gunnery raid. If they are well armed, you may find yourself with irrepairable damage to your boat in short order.

1939 to 1940 is mostly no problem with most of the Merchants. IN 1941, you may encounter some Large Cargos (GWX) which has some proper weapons. 1942-1945, it's submerged attacks for me.

Use the periscope without magnification. The sea should be relatively smooth. You can also see by the way your target behaves. If it's not pitching, conditions probably ok for DG.

For a while I've thought that this is why the weather report was originally attached to the Nav O, but many mods (including GWX) annoyingly move it to the Watch O, where it does no good at all.

Wow I never knew that :rotfl:
I never asked for whether in stock but when I started playing GWX I started useing it and was wondering why my WO was just stareing at me madly when I asked him for it. |

You boys weren't around in the old days. Everybody complained that the Navigator could tell you what the weather was even if you were 200 meters down! The mods all transferred it to the Watch Officer so you could only get the report when surfaced. You still have to have a Navigator in his slot for it to work, though.
It reminds me of the great mutiny when we were told SH3 would have a scripted campaign like SH2 had had. We all cheered when we were told they were changing it to a real career mode like AOD's. Then after it was released all the new guys started complaining "the only assignment I ever get is patrol area X".

Haha I wish I was around in those days.
I had just gotten into subsimming with Silent hunter 2 after watching Das boot. Then SH 3 came out and here I am now. |

For the sake of argument, who's to say he doesn't remember what the weather was when you submerged? ![]() I admit that in the theoretically possible situation wherein you've been submerged lower than PD long enough for the weather to change it's unrealistic for the NA to give you an up-to-date report... but when does that ever happen? |

Hmmm...I guess I would like that the GWX team (or whatever who create the weather icon) would include a simple (dumbass) message saying after this type of weather report :
Winds 70989xxx km/h, East North West direction, Tornado on the port side, flying angels on the bow, 300 000 tons tanker sitting duck with a sign saying "Shoot me" on the port side, etc, etc. (who really cares about the weather report in this game anyways ?) Then a beautiful line would say : "Appropriate weather for deck gun" or "Inappropriate weather for deck gun" Both these choices would be written in the text area. No need for a custom voice add-on. |

I don't remember where I found this, but this might help some, once you reach surface.
Stock game settings for the stormconditions can be changed with a text editor. To a good compromise and lets you use the guns in mild rain and waves. Taking a guess you have the VIIB boat. Ok open the NSS_Uboat7b.cfg with a text editor (textpad/notepad) located in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Submarine\NSS_U boat7b Note if your have a different boat just open the correct file / folder. Locate the StormConditions= Change it to; StormConditions=11,0.8;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] or StormConditions=14,0.9;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] The above values at least offer some flexability. I have the storm conditions for my VIIb set to 12,0.8. It helps, without being too unrealistic. |
