New child checks to identify future criminals

Checks will be made on all children to identify potential criminals under a further extension of the "surveillance state" announced by Tony Blair today.

A Downing Street review of law and order policy also called for greater use of sophisticated CCTV, an expanded DNA database and "instant justice" powers for police.

Tony Blair is quick to put the screws on us but when it comes to Iran he runs away for help. This country is becoming a prison slowly, we are losing are rights and true democracy.

Steed, I have to ask myself whether it's your apparent anti-labour stance that prompts this sort of thread or a bit of a paranoid disorder :hmm:

As a fairly law-abiding person (let's not discuss drug laws) I don't have a problem with this news story and ignoring the sensationalist headlines, they're talking about profiling youths in high risk areas and homes to target them with preventative therapy - it's not exactly DNA sampling toddlers and gassing them because they have the wrong genes.

Just like global warming, the cold war, the coming population explosion, communism, paper or plastic, the ozone layer, enviromental collapse, the space race, and the coming ice age, the military industrial complex. We must fear, fear this fear that, fear fear fear. Such an easy emotion to raise up this fear. Hate being another.

They are identifying environmental roles toward criminal tendency. This is like if you are getting kicked in the head and you identify that it's someone's foot that is causing you discomfort.
It takes a scientist to prove "common sense", which will immediately be debunked by some other scientist that received a $5 million grant from a corporation with a business model that is threatened by "common sense".

Parents working 2 jobs and have no time to raise their children. Neighborhood gangs and high crime rate in the area. Parents who are completely amoral when it comes to their job. High drug consumption in the area. Underfunded school system.

Dude. The list goes on.

Like so often, the measurement itself is not the problem. Ensuring that the data is not abused, gets not sold, and is not used in a way it was not intended to be used in - this is the problem. And I see no solution to all this. So: from me, too.

The surveillance state is a scary idea. I'm starting to see it in my hometown of Vancouver too. Slowly the cops are getting what they want. Cameras here, cameras there.

Reminds of me of that line from "Enemy of the State"

"Privacy is dead because we can't afford it anymore". I think that isn't exactly the quote but accurate enough.

EDIT.

Exactly. The abuse of power is the real threat. I don't trust the cops when it comes to not abusing my rights. Hell the RCMP are bloody corrupt beyond measure. In my province alone there are multiple suspicious cases being looked into. Policing the police (I know, cliche) is what I worry about, but so many people just assume it isn't an issue.

Maybe we should start using Cyberpunk comparisons. Plenty of disenfranchised youths facing the immolation of the individual in a cold future of computers, advertising, and corporate control of the government. Absolutely cheers me up.

Then how about a new work of art to over-use? There's a wealth of literature involving police states, Philip K Dick would be a good place to start.
Bradbury/Tartofsky/H.G. Wells/Ernst Junger/Margaret Atwood

and hundreds more
