Default knowing how much fuel needed to go home??

Is there anyway of knowing when you have to turn around to go home ? i guessed and ran out of fuel in the kiel canal, does that mean it is game over if this happens else where ?

Set waypoints to your home port then get reports from your navigator.......he will estimate the distance and also give the maximum range of remaining fuel.Note that the slower you proceed the available range increases.

I guess you can just press the "ESC" key and return to base if you run out of fuel......

Yes, if using GWX. But you can still cheat a bit and go on electric engines, submerged - they'll be working and recharging even without fuel (bad bug).

Yes but not much.

Anyway, as already stated, plot out your ENTIRE course, ask the navigator, range to course end and then ask him estimated range at current speed. If your course's range is more then your estimated range at current speed, you have problems

Not exactly like that. The optimal speed is somewhere in the middle, like 7-9 knots (try to figure it on yourself for your own boat and her upgrades - it may differ a bit). If you go slower or faster than optimal speed, you use more fuel per a distance unit, so your total range gets smaller.

Yes. In stock ans well as in GWX you get 100 renown points for coming back to base, but there is a difference. In stock you don't must to go back, you can leave your patrol anywhere in the sea (then you don't get the 100 renown points). In GWX not returning means the end of career (as it would be in real life...).

Only if you play at 100% realism.

Oh... THAT I didn't know... Maybe it's because I've always played at 100% realism? Must go ask Bernhard. BERNHARD!!!

You won't get a fairly accurate report of maximum range from your navigator until your batteries are charged 100%, FYI.

The point is it's a bit unrealistic to warp home with no fuel left...

I don't trust my navigator. But I do keep track of fuel remaining, the distance I will need to cover to get to a refueling base/ship, a bit of a reserve for emergency high speed runs and a little extra for peace of mind.

Docking a ship is a satisfying feat of seamanship. It is pretty nice to do it with band playing. LOL

There's no feeling quite like docking at your home base yourself
But on the odd rare occasion it's very late at night and just a tad too easy to press the 'Esc' button...when your not running at 100% of course

One of my favorite returns was very early in the morning (game time, not...well, maybe it was real time too)...anyway, it was 0-dark-30 and there was a heavy fog with rain. I could hear the ships' horns tooting, cruising into the harbor at 1 knot, couldn't see anything beyond about 100 meters; creeped all the way to the pen. Could barely make out the people and the propaganda posters.

Very eerie, very fun. Yeah, sailing all the way back can have its rewards.
