Yes, this has always been a bit of a problem. I have to say I bump gamma in the game a bit to make everything a bit brighter overall. While this may wash out the colors a bit, the sea isn't black and the sun is looking even hotter. Screenshots always come out a bit darker because they are taken from the framebuffer, without any brightness/contrast/gamma modification...
The latest WIP ROW (currently being tested) is alot better. Together with gamma up a notch it really looks alot better ingame than the usual screenshot posted on this board.
