Whenever you locate another SHIV screenie please add it to this threadI just wnated to say thanks to Drebbel for posting some screenshots that I hadn't seen yet. So, thanks Drebbel and keep it comin'.

I really love the detail on the new models and the other graphical improvements, still doesn't look like I'm gonna get my beloved transparent water, oh well.

I've seen all of those before scattered all over the internet, but now that they are in one place, I can see them more closely. These are the ships I can see:

Battleships:
Definitely Yamato class.
Definitely Fuso class.
Maybe Kongo class? (no clear shot, and only visible in a couple)

Carriers:
These are only in the background, but I can see one which definitely looks like a Shokaku class carrier. In one shot, I think I can see a Junyo next to the Shokaku, but my eyes might be playing tricks on me since I just got out of bed.

Heavy Cruisers:
- Definitely Takao class.
- Maybe Mogami class? Almost positively certain that is what it is.

Plus destroyers, which I cannot identify right now.

Does anyone see enything else here?

BTW - although there has been debate over whether or not these are actually screenshots, I think that at least most of them actually are.

I noted some neat graphical things which I can't quite figure out -

Look carefully at the waterline of the ships/subs. What does it look like to you?

It seems to me like they added some 'shiny' effect from when water had just washed over a metal surface, and/or a partially transparent water surface....

Or am I seeing things?

Safe-Keeper

It seems to me like they added some 'shiny' effect from when water had just washed over a metal surface, and/or a partially transparent water surface....If you mean that it looks as if the water runs off of the hull of the ships after waves hit them, then yes, I've noticed that, too. See the submarine in post eight.

It might just be my imagination, though.

Bah, what I'm waiting for is cooling-water outlets on the sides of the boats and ships:p.

wow thanks. some ones ive not seen yet drebbel. the ships and subs look fantastic but are we sure these are "in game" shots. Also is it me or does the sea look a bit dark and naff with little detail? (on the surface) maybe its just the screens.

And water draining out of vent-holes as we surface, and water running out of scuppers when surface ships plow through rough seas, and...

Maybe in the next generation of sims. Hope I'm alive to see it.

All three shots are great, but I particularly like the interior pic. The sailors 'stovepipe' pants and chambray shirt are perfect. Brings back memories.:yep:

CCIP

Lovely! I agree about the sailor's clothes; otherwise the interior is exactly what I expected - a direct carry-over from SHIII quality-wise, and that's a compliment since I don't think we could hope for a more detailed interior than SHIII (but we could hope for more compartments!). Really gives you a sense of being on a bigger boat - ain't no Type II :smug:

And the normal mapping really improves the look of the water, that's very good.

I don't see the 'wet hull' effect I saw on the previous ones, though... was it just concept art then?

Also, am I right that SHIV took a cue from mods and has a much longer view distance? The shots look like they use our beloved 16k view mod :D

a direct carry-over from SHIII quality-wiseAren't the textures sharper:-??

Oh, and ships didn't have shadows in Silent Hunter III, did they? And now look at that huge black specimen by the US sub in the harbour shot! Is that a warship super-structure or am I missing something?
Nice either way.

Oh, and imagine if shadows are drawn on the sea-floor, too. Imagine the huge shadow of a battleship creeping across the sea-floor...

SHIII didn't have shadows, that's true (and a pity). I hope seafloor-drawn shadows are modeled... sweet:know:

The Devs haven't told us anything that shows clearly if they will model the full boat, or just the same stations as in SHIII (I really hope they'll model the whole subs this time).

It happens automaticily when you dive a XXI in SHIII, so it would most likley be the same in SHIV.

I'm getting excited from the new screen shots of SHIV. It's looking good! The dev's said it uses the same graphic engine and SHIII, but overhauled to improve frame rates and appearance.

I'm already saving for it, just have to get permission from the in-comming commader in chief (my future wife!).

The amusing thing was that that sub in that movie was (loosely) based on the USS Seadragon. While on patrol out of Manilla early in the war her paint started peeling off revealing a redish pink undercoat (primer I suppose). They supposedly even got a mention from a Tokyo english language broadcast about the color....called them pirates...*lol*

Not sure how many patrols she actually did before she finally got a new coat of paint...since reddish pink isn't exactly the best camo in the world...*lol

So far the screenshots look great. Great ship and submarine models. I only have one question. Isn't the Pacific theatre supposed to be alot brighter and blue as compared to the dreary, gray and dark Atlantic theatre from SH3? The water and sky backgrounds look almost like what we saw in SH3 in the Atlantic. I was thinking the Pacific would look alot brighter, sunny, and blue. Well at least when the weather is good.

The battles in the shots do not necessarily mean that there will be such epic battles in the campaign. Those have probably only been set up for demonstration purposes, although I think we can assume there will be at least some historical battles in the SHIV campaign.

Hi all.

Does anyone know if there will be realistic weather conditions mainly typhoons and severe thunderstorms which are common in the pacific?
That sort of effect would have a massive effect on the way the game is approached as far as planning an attack on a task force for example.

Any ideas????

(great pics by the way)!!!!!!

Lionman
01-05-07, 02:24 PM
I sure hope so, as my only criticism of the weather in SH III (having lived and worked in the North Sea for 18 years myself) was that bad weather was scarcely modelled above force 4, whereas in the real North Sea the bad weather in winter was almost constantly far far worse with very large waves indeed, poor visibility and driving winds creating white spume from wave tops.
:arrgh!:
Ahar ye lanlubbers! I tell 'ee thee has no conception of the power of that wild ocean!

In the Pacific I guess it was even worse on occasion. IMO "Stormy Weather" could and should be a major feature of an ocean combat simulator, maybe with a switch for those with lower powered systems that can't handle modelling it.

The first enemy of any skipper is the ocean itself and both the North Sea and the Southern Ocean are notorious for frequent monsterous weather.

However, look closely at the front of the sub.

There is rendering going on there if I am not mistaken.

sparky3153
01-06-07, 09:40 PM
I take it you worked on the "rigs" Lionman??

They will probably go for gameplay rather than "realistic weather".
But its nothing that a decent modder cant sort out I guess!!!
You mite be onto somethin with the toggle switch to enable realistic weather for people with high end systems!!! (unlike mine which was out of date within 6 months of building it)!!! Oh well, credit card needs a bashin anyway!! ha ha

As far as the pics go, i think we are all going to be dissapointed with the "actual" game graphics!?! They just all seem a little bit too touched up to me!!!
As if an artist has had a go at em!!

Just my opinion though.

The shot posted by Kapitan_Phillips looks a lot more like the sort of in-game graphics we are going to see (even though He doesnt believe it himself)!! No offence mate.

It all comes down to what type of system you have at the end of the day.

What's with all the screenshots that show a sub cruising around on the surface in the middle of a fleet action???

I hope that's not the kind of gameplay they were thinking of when they said that the Narwhal Class boats wouldn't be included because "They don’t fit with the type of game play that they have prepared."

Well....., every time I get even a little bit "cocky" with my TypeIID, .... I get sunk.

Cruising around on the surface within a couple of thousand yards of a BB is an order of magnitude past "cocky"!

If one looks close at the tower's side you can see what seems to be some weathering. My concern (gasp if you wish when looking at the scene) is NO US Sub EVER left on a mission with it's anchor in place:huh:!!!!!! Also the deck post with lines attached, were never were in place either during a patrol !!!!!!!!! I hope this is a training mission as I would hate to be depth charged and have an anchor come off and it's chain rattle away my position or have one of the deck lines get caught in a mine cable while attempting to enter a harbor and drop of a UDT team !!!

Happy Hunting :ping:

Sure it would be nice to have everything modelled correctly, but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think this matters much at all.

sunvalleyslim
02-07-07, 03:28 PM
US Diesel boats all have the anchor on the outside of the hull. There is a anchor chain locker in the superstructure. As for the lifelines, during the 60's they were only put up while in port for safety. Underway I would think that they would be a sound problem, such as vibration giving your position away.

flintlock
02-07-07, 03:48 PM
I think what he worries about is the historical inaccuracy.I can appreciate that. Unfortunately, games seldom ever get every last little detail historically accurate. Even if a tltle is a labor of love and resources are allocated to research, invariably it always comes down to economics. While there are many issues which factor into the equation: a limited budget, resources and development cycle often lead to compromises. And unfortunately, historical accuracy usually suffers to a degree. Personally, this is one I can live with.

As can I.

I was just putting a different "twist" on some of the comments previously mentioned regarding weathering on the boat - or where rust was and wasn't. Thought mention of the anchor and deck lines was in line with the other comments.

The one that goes 6mins 19 secs, from the New Trailer! thread. It's streaming, but
you can download a better quality version if you register at gamespot, and hi-res if you pay (but bugger that). It's just a bit further than halfway where the carrier is sinking.

Thanks Boris!

Just saw the video. Holy toledo! That carrier went up like it was the 4th of July. Hot diggidy damn! I've thought of something else too, I know we could go on like this forever but; it'd be nice to see a spherical shockwave eminating out from an explosion of that magnitude. Why not throw in a bit of camera shake as the shockwave passes your P.O.V. too? Also, I always liked the 'speed of sound' Mods we saw for SHIII, it just made things that touch more realistic. I know things are getting silly with us asking for the Earth, but finishing touches that could be implemented in the next game maybe?

does anybody know if the ships will be able to sink from flodding ?

What do you mean Morts? I thought that sinking from flooding was kind of an integral part of sinking in the first place?

Boris

Even the ships in stock SH3 sank from flooding to some degree.

I'd love to see speed of sound integrated into games. There's nothing cooler than seeing the flash of an explosion, followed by the bang seconds later. Not sure if you couls make this work dynamically in game. I also think sounds of gunfire should carry further. Just being picky really, but for a future game, I want it!

Yes it is. Pages 240-241. Nice book, but very heavy on the technical side of US Subs.

A lot fo games have speed of sound modeled in-game. Steel Beasts Pro PE, WWII Online, etc.. etc..

I love that effect as well.

Yeah, it's really nice to hear in-game. Very immersive as well.

From the devs. I've spoken to for other games, the effect isn't that difficult to integrate either. In fact, I think even Steel Beasts 1 had it, and that game came out close to 7+ years ago, IIRC.

I thought SH3 had this effect (thought I remembered hearing it when shelling some shipping from outside view from the targets perspective).

Boris
02-13-07, 10:39 AM
No SH3 doesn't have it, there was a small mod though that had a few seconds delay before the explosion sounds to simulate it.

But if it's not that hard to do, then i hope they've already done it.

The key I see is in Boris' word dynamic. The mod for SHIII added a second or two delay, which I didn't like because I always shoot from very close. A truly dynamic delay, having it start with none and get longer with growing distance, would be very cool indeed.

Thats the case, its no good having a 2 second delay when your right next to the gun

a delay and a huge bang would really add to the game.... Also having the screen shake if you freeview near a gun like that yamato when it fires would be awsome and really add to that feel of power from its 18 inch guns :p

I have no idea, it's just a guess.

My assumption is based on the area in and around there may have some piping or other components that may get hot. That's a pretty large area that gets flooded, isn't it?

Anyone here able to shed some light on this?

I remember musing, not even seriously, about how awesome it'd be if there was cooling water running out of a hole in the submarine, like in reality's boats and ships. I think it was Neal who replied with something like, "yeah, and water running off of the hull. Maybe in a next generation sub sim. Hoping I'm alive to see it". Well, that's one hope coming true, as he's to the best of my knowledge... still alive;).

Reminds me about how, in the days of the 1,4MB floppy disks, I joked about a future where disks were the size of a stamp. Of course it'd be impossible - you'd lose them in an instant - but it was fun to imagine nonetheless. That was in the nineties. Already today, in 2007, we've got those stamp-sized floppy disks - also known as 1 GB memory chips. Very handful for us digital camera users.

I don't think so. Foaming water is one of the hardest things to recreate graphically, along with proper flames. The outer hull is hollow, and water runs out of those scuttles (I'm not sure that's the proper term for them) all the time. I think they're just trying to make it look more real, and doing the best they can.

flintlock
02-18-07, 06:24 PM
You're probably right. It does seem like something that would be a challenge to model well. I guess I just have a vivid imagination.

I think the only place that steam would be generated would be around the exhaust ports of the diesels while on the surface. I know of nothing (machinery, piping, etc) forward of those that would cause steam to be generated from wave action.

I'll check my library for more info.

Just FYI....:ping:

Did anyone notice the new sprites which are evidently going to be attached to the flooding holes? There was a discussion in another thread about it. I was convinced it was a steam, mist and water mixture -- but those in the know suggest just water. Agreed though, looks promising.
