This is in response to the Operation Petticoat post:
I think the US did paint their scopes pink, I remember reading that in one of Richard O'Kanes books. Pink is the hardest color to spot for the scopes.

During my Survival at Sea training I was told that Pink would be the best colour for life boats, I assume because that is the best colour to spot. But for unknown reasons ;) they are never painted that colour.

They probably didn't want to attract Marines.

ZING!

 :D

Hey Drebble have you got your graphics settings turned way down or something because your shots look more like SHIII than the pretty effects and such seen on page 1 (bubbles, underwater darkness, fire, smoke and various other prettieness)?

Yes, they are from a French website. We should check and see if they mention the system specs they are using.

Wow, that sub looks huge.

I didn't know they were that big. :arrgh!:

I've been on the Pampanito before, but you never really realize how big some of those subs were/are.

I am afraid this thread may have gotten too cluttered to find images. I searched for some previously posted images, but simply could not find them, so I backtracked to their original posting site. The number of quote reposts of the same image several times increases the clutter too. Maybe the thread could be edited to single views or thumbnails of each image made in the waiting time? I know, on arrival, there will be a whole new round of exicting postings of actual, and probably remarkable, game screens. Maybe on the 21st, this thread could be replaced with a live in-game screen thread?

Well, it looks like those of you who want to do manual navigation has gotten your way. I see everything on the lower left hand side to lay a course onto a map as if in real life.

For those of you who dont what those things are, I will explain them to you. Lets start with the pencil since everyone know what that is and what it looks like. Now if we go clockwise, we see the 'compass'. You probably used one of these in school to draw arcs or circles. But this one doesnt have a lead on one end (usually). It is used to measure distance. Going left, we have the 'magnifying glass'. This is for you poor sods who cant see very well anymore. LOL Just underneath it, the wooden box looking thing is the compass for defining course in a north, east, west, south direction. Some of you have used the digital compass overlay in SHIII. Same principle. Now going clockwise, we have what is called a 'parrellel rule'. It is used to lay out a course. After determing which direction you want to go, you can use this to 'walk' across the map. In RL, you would have a compass rose somewhere printed on the map. This is how it would be used if the rose was on the map. Say you see a ship heading south east but you dont really know what is the actual course. You would place the parellel rule over the ships course and then walk it over to the rose. When the edge of the rule hits the center mark of the rose, you could then read the actual course of the ship. On top of the parallel rule, is of course an 'eraser'. Its used to remove any mistakes. DUH! Now the little green thing with the slot in it is just a 'magnet compass'. It kind of looks like one that a boy scout would use.

So anyway, I hope this helps any of you.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think those graphics in the bottom left that you are talking about are purely aesthetic. I doubt that the pencil, protractor, or the parallel rule will be clickable/usable. I'm betting that navigation will be basically the same as SHIII.

So how exactly did the subs navigate out at sea without GPS and/or loran systems, etc? Was there ever a chance of being lost without reference to land due to drift and what not?

Really? well that would suck then.

You would have bouys laying out in the bay showing you wear the channel is. One side of the channel the bouys would be green in color while the bouys on the other side would be red. Green is on your starboard side and red is on your port side IF youre leaving port. If you are returning, its 'Red Right Returning'.

As far as finding themselves out in the ocean, they use the old tried and true method of Sextant and charts. You can see the navigator using a sextant when he is on the conning tower in 'Das Boot'. The method is hundreds of years old and still works to near perfection. Its hard to learn though.

It's clear from the screens of the sea floor that the risk of going aground or striking something is very real. We're going to have to really pay attention, as I think we are going to be wading in shallow waters a lot.

So do you have a choice between Imperial or Metric Measurements? One of those Periscope shots looked a bit too shallow for feet.

And the ID Book data was in meters.
