View Full Version : Introducing some new aircraft for SH3 (pics inside) - Need advice...
Ok, so first off, Im teaching my self 3DS MAX, So weather or not any models I make end up in a mod or not, it doesnt mean I am wasting my time - as Im enjoying what I am doing regardless.
Right, so here is what I would like to accomplish.
1) Model several new, low poly historic aircraft to SH3
2) Create suitable textures/skins for the models that will display correctly in-game
3) Export the aircraft in to SH3 and apply some of the existing aircraft properties to them. eg - AI, ordenace (bombs), animated propellers, turrets and bomb bay doors where nessecary.
I am assuming this is possible, as several new ships have been successfully added to SH3 recently. (Please correct me if im wrong)
So far I have only modelled only one aircraft - A major player in ASW that is missing in SH3 - the Lockheed Hudson (see below)
I am about to begin work on a Mosquito
Other planes I hope to make are:
Bristol Beaufighter
B-17
Halifax
Armstrong whitworth whitley
I am NOT an experienced modder in any way, I dont have much of a clue how to acheive what I want - beside create the aircraft models themselves.
I CANNOT do this on my own, I will need a lot of help from expirienced modders here.
So my first question is how possible it to add these models (without SH3s SDK)
And who is willing to help me with this mini project.

At the moment the poly count is approx 1000, anyone know the poly count of the flight models already in sh3? (which look rather shabby - epecially the wellington)

The polycount recommended for aircraft is between 1 and 2 thousand but the battleships are up to 35000 so if your over the 2 dont worry too much - will only be a problem if you have loads on the screen at one time
Yes aircraft can be added - the floatplanes are an addition http://web.telia.com/~u18230645/ Sergbuto did them so he may be the best to help you
Maybe one aircraft to do is the Spitfire which can double up as the Seafire for carrier use as you tend to see a lot more fighters than bombers - well I do anyway

Can I put in a vote for the F4F Wildcat (RN Martlet)? It was a MAJOR player in ASW hunter-killer patrols in conjunction with the Avengers. In brief, the fighters would strafe the boat, forcing it to dive whereupon the Avenger would run in with rockets, depth charges or "Fido" homing torpedoes.
While Seafire/Spitfire would be good to have for specific missions (Battle of Britain, aircraft ferry to Malta, etc) I humbly submit the Wildcat would be a much more useful adversary in the near term.

You can use program Pack3D by Sansal to import the model to SH3. It is relatively easy to do.

At the moment the poly count is approx 1000
The polycount recommended for aircraft is between 1 and 2 thousand but the battleships are up to 35000 so if your over the 2 dont worry too much - will only be a problem if you have loads on the screen at one time
With 4000 polys which are still within the limits recommended by Devs for aircraft one can make fine aircraft models, such f.e. this Mosquito

Actually, Mosquito is not new. The screenshots were posted on these forums in December, 2005. I did not release the model because I could not make transparant glass for the cabin (which irritates me a lot) and wanted to have the aircraft with rockets as well.
Avro and Blenheim were made by Vaa. They are on the level of SH3 stock models. He also made Wildcat and some other aircrafts (do not remember all).

Is it possible to use "virtual" rockets? Maybe put eight five-inch guns in the fuselage with one round of HE ammunition each?

There are about zillion things I want to ask you....
I want to add many models to SH3, im happy to model and skin them, but i have no idea how to export them in to SH3 or give them the correct parameters/ tweak them.
For instance, how you get the guns on a model ship or aircraft to fire from the right place/position? or mount bombs in the right place.
How do you get the porpellers spinning and bomb bay doors opening - what should I be doing to my model in 3ds max to ensure I dont screw this possibily up.
how should i go about creating a skin for the models, can i use UVW unwrap in max then create a bit map from that? will that work ok?
I see you have created decent AI subs, Id like to add some my self!
I really want to learn and start creating some great content for SH3
Any help you can give me would be great, as im a beginer here, do you have a tutorial on these forums i could learn from?
Also do you plan to release a mod with all your new units and features in one bundle? or have it release in the next supermod IUB/GW version? if you do is there any chance I could contribute some stuff, Id love to help you in return for any help you can give me - It would be an honour. ;)

Use Pack3d to extract some stock aircraft from SH3 dat format, say Ju-88. :) This will help you to understand how SH3 models are constructed and will answer most of your questions.
SH3 models are built of blocks/parts. To import a new aircraft, you need to clone one of stock and replace it block/part by block/part with a new model. Props (always rotating)and guns can be left/used from the stock unit and there are no bay doors opening. SH3 has pretty poor flight model and simulation of the aircraft behavior.
As to texturing, SH3 does not support all the features of modern graphical software. Texture plates are also extracted/imported by Pack3d. I do not use MAX for texturing, therefore can help on that.

No tutorial. There was a SH3 DAT-format description by lurbz on older forums and a number of threads discussing how to do some things and about Pack3D as well. I am not the only knowledgeable person here: ref, Anvart and any other person who imports models to SH3 can be asked about that.

I do not plan on making a bundle. If released, they will be released one by one or in small groups, except for the Kriegsmarine mod which requires modifications of a number of stock files.

do you have java installed?
Should do, I used to run Azureus on my machine a few months back, had to install Java for that to run too - so it should still be there, Ill double check tonight ;)

According to Serg, there is a model of the Wildcat out there "somewhere". My question is how could we mod the behavior of the airgroup to simulate the wildcat/avenger teams? Do we have the ability to program them to emulate historic behavior? Would their innate nature replicate what we want? Or is it not possible?
I'm guessing you'd assign a carrier avenger and wildcat files, which would then spawn based on the probabilities. But would they spawn together or one or the other only? I've tried building tests using hurricanes and lightnings but nothing conclusive (meaning, "I can't tell if it's the game or something I screwed up"):damn:

I doubt whether they would follow historic behaviour but you should be able to get both to spawn from a carrier
