This is a place where you can put your work in for everyone to see.

You can post anything you want as long as it´s art related and made by you. Composed screenshots, hand drawn stuff, wallpapers etc.

There´s one rules:
1. DO NOT post other peoples art and claim it as yours.

If possible, attach the original photo/screenshot, so we can see how much you´ve edited it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here´s two of my wallpapers that I made last week.

Nah, it´s just a composite shot. The planes and the background are from different images.

A little 'painting' I made for WaW.

I used dead german from the Call of Duty II for this one.

Oh, and 'Rolf Witte' is one of my crew members aboard U27. :)

Xabba, one thing about yours is that the clouds are not really reflections, it just looks like there are clouds in the water, that's really the only thing I noticed, except for the sun in the reflection, you could try to put where it really is, in the picture. Other than that it looks good.:D

Dowly
07-11-06, 03:31 PM
Looks good Xab. I have to agree with Bort about the clouds and the sun, tho.

XabbaRus
07-11-06, 04:31 PM
tell me about it. Bloody 3DS MAx where ever I put the light for the sun the reflection would go anywhere but where I wanted it.

As for the reflections, well that is a flat glass reflective surface I chucked on.

I've done better just need to find them.

Hey Xab, you could use some bump mapping in the water's material. Just my opinion:up:

Welcome back to "Pimp My Tank". In the last episode, we showed you what Uncle Adolf from Germany had sent us. Adolf was hoping that we would do something about his Tiger as, I quote, "Taking a joyride should be fun, but I'm too embarrassed to even go to work in that! My neighbour, Hermann, is constantly making fun of my Tiger. Please help!!."

Worry not Adolf. Soon it'll be you who's laughing and taking nice Sunday drives throughout the french country side.

The first task we faced was the absolutely horrendous wheels the tank had, so we ordered custom made, solid steel wheels for you.

The problem with that would be that I've gotten used to model using the Modo's subdivide mode (it's kind of an autosmooth thingy), so the amount of polygons would propably be abit too much for a game. The tracks in the state they are now (finished) have 91 000 polygons (blocky as hell), with SubD turned on the polycount jumps to ~1.7 million and 6+ million when rendered. And that's just one track, so ~12 million polygons (rendered) for just the tank's tracks. :haha:

Roughly 20 minutes.

11-19-09, 06:15 PM
Ah, not that bad, would have expected more with 6...million...polygons...

Dowly
11-19-09, 06:43 PM
I toned the subd down for that render, so it was 'only' 2.5 million polys or so.

artao
11-19-09, 06:46 PM
GOOD GORRAM CHRIST!!! 12 MILLION POLYS IN THE THE TRACKS ALONE?!?!?
and only 20 min to render? you must have a MONSTER machine ... mine whimpers thinking about it.
very nice work, btw. with that many polys, you could zoom right down in there and get some awesome detail shots.
stream of thought here .... are you still able to interact with models at this resolution on your machine? if so, fricken awesome!

Anyhow ..

I believe modo's rendering engine has been optimised for the SubD. Like Vue for example, I think the most polys I've had in one scene was 3-4 billion, add to that wind effects on trees, lighting and shadows, yet it rendered it in less than an hour... animated scene was a different story. :haha:

Quick (and hopefully the last) update on the tracks. I think I'm finished with them, with the exception actually having the spacing etc. correct. But that's going to happen when I have the hull done. Managed to cut the polycount to ~2.1 million per side, can squeeze 400k or so off by reducing the wheel count to 8 from 16 per side (need to see how it looks when the hull is ready).

:haha:

We're gonna need a bigger computer.......:o

Dont know yet. Propably nothing. The only reason I started doing this was because I think it's easier to get used to modelling by doing a "complete" project instead of replicating stuff you see in tutorials.

I've managed to tone down the polygons quite abit. Now the total of both tracks together is somewhere around 2.7 million in subd and without subd 600k or so. :yeah:

@letum -- VERY nice .... wondering what techniques you used to assemble the bits .... barely needs any texturing I'd say, just a nice metallic surface ... poly count? :03:

Letum
11-21-09, 04:49 PM
Cheers.
The only mildly complex bit was the heat sink fins on the top of the
piston heads. First I polly modeled the basic shape. It quickly became
apparent that it was going to be impossible to model such complex fins
so I used a displacement map instead. It still needs work; some of the
fins should be longer, some shorter.

The gearbox is a polly modeled sub-D. Tubes are all splines and the
lower part of the cylinders are lathed splines.

I could get away with chucking some metallic surfaces at it, but I need
the practice texturing and the result is always better. Besides, Textures
are fun.

It's all 21st century Airfix.

165,418 Pollys total so far, but the render engine adds a few more
when it calculates the displacement maps.

First textures underway:

just because I like to work with real objects, but the fins are just far
to complex. Take a look at my refs; it's a nightmare.

Having talked with Chad a bit about 3D modeling, I've decided to restart the King Tiger "soon". I lost what I had when I reformatted my PC, but doesn't matter. Lots of stuff I should've done otherwise in it, so better start from scratch. :hmmm: Also, as a extra, I'm thinking of modelling the interior first and then slap armor plates around it, kinda like one does a miniature model. (kinda have started on it already)

Wouldn't want to be in a King Tiger, when I did research on the interiors, it seemed like the shells were stored on the inside walls against the armor plates. Propably the same with other tanks, but just never knew that, feels kinda silly. :hmmm:

Oberon

Heeey, the King Tiger was actually quite mobile for it's size! :yep: But yeh, it's early stages in war weren't pretty. Some units lost majority of their Tiger II's to machine break downs. I remember reading that one unit lost something like 5 of their first KT's and they had to blow them up to avoid the enemy getting their hands on them, they never fired a shot with them.

Here's a good pic of where (AFAIK) the shells were stored (those little shelves on the back there).

Here are a few surviving renders I did years ago with POV-Ray. I had a real affinity for spheres back then for some reason, probably because the clear materials catch the light and do cool stuff with it. The version of POV back then didn't have some of the really nice features that the current release has. Now if I just had the time and attention span to take advantage of it.

Yes, that is my name that I plastered into the images. We didn't have to worry about privacy so much back then.

This last one is my favorite. The end of the copper cylinder that was differenced off of the bottom of the glass reflected back into the sphere to create these kind of Princess Leia-hair swirlies on the inside. That was totally unexpected.

Or if 3ds max has constrains like Modo, which allows to do the same but by choosing the right constrain and moving the ropes down and they'll wrap around the balloon.

I like it! What program did you make it in? Texturing is one thing i have a lot of trouble with when it comes to my artwork and wish to get better.
Good old Photoshop 7. I learned some tricks when I started doing skins for Il-2, but textures (Especially metals) are still my weak area. And lighting.

I'm sure there is lol, I'm still learning the basics so I just did the simplest, yet probably not easiest, things! I'll have to have a play around see what things do, or what happens when I press that button....

Yes it still does, infact Discreet ceased support for it, they host the DL and give out new reg codes and that's it. But if you want to learn modeling I recommend it since moving up to 3ds Max is easy, and 3ds max is widely used.

Right, it's the colony where the story of movie ALIENS takes place.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mkay, started to redo the buildings with more detail + subD. This is the north lock, from where the marines entered the complex in the movie. All the locks are the same building, except for the S lock that houses the Operations room on top of it where they hold up. Small update on the main module of the LV-426 project, added more stuff to the roof, still needs few panels and stuff. Just for fun I looked at prices for 3d programs, seems you need a small company in order to afford the prices they demand. Subscription fees as well! :o

Edit: Assembled the rear wing to see how it looks like.

Bumpmap test! (This is how the sides should look if you use the movie as reference)

Looking good. :DL

I've begun doing the mount for the rear wing now. The two pillars are hovering in the air at the moment, a bit draggy as well with the square shape. :O:

The mount is fused with the bottom wing.

Suggestions are welcome, looks weird with just vertical pillars like that IMO. :)

Going to shape them into wings later.
