Ironclad? :hmmm:
Not far off, I've just a bout finished it now so I might as well tell! 'tis the Turbinia, the first steam turbine powered vessel, launched in 1897. The particular type of engine later powered the Lusitania, Mauritania and HMS Dreadnought.

Its not that complex of a scene, 35,000 polygons- most of that is the trench. One light source, and environmental fog.

Working on a british X-Craft. Wanted to do this a long time after reading 'Sink the Tirpitz'. I found some plans for the X5-X10 series [more here (http://www.heiszwolf.com/subs/plans/plans.html)].
If you have any good pics or drawing please share. I want to add a lot of details once the basic form is done.

My X-Craft is starting to look like something from outer space. Still not happy with the upper part of the tail, the one next to the exhaust. I will probably have to redo it later but for now I'm sick of tweaking.
The plans I found are so misaligned that I suspect the British did it on purpose to confuse the enemy should they get their hands on them.

More good work Oberon! What is the link to your dA page?
Have you considered a CGI sea with hand drawing objects (the ships and planes)? I've seen a few movies where traditional animation and CGI are mixed and I thought it looked very interesting.

Very nice Alex ^^^ love it!
Finished this a little while ago but never ended up putting on any pics.
The Turbinia, built in 1894 was the first steam turbine powered vessel in the world. Versions of it's engines went on to power the Lusitania, Mauretania and HMS Dreadnought.
My first attempt at modelling a real world vehicle, I tried to get it as accurate as possible but I could only find very basic low res plans, plus the 2 sets of plans I had seemed to differ both with each other and the actual vessel as it is now. I managed to get some half decent reference pics though. Also, anyone with a keen eye will probably notice there is one too many windows on the bridge :p annoyingly I somehow only noticed after I'd finished and just couldn't be arsed to change it.
Today, in Newcastle's Discovery Museum (which isn't that far from me so I really should try and visit lol).

Thanks man, I'm still playing around with SkinVue's settings, I'll have a fiddle around with the specular sliders. Though one reason for the brightness there is because I put a point light very close to light up her body and i think i made it a little bit too bright. :D
Vue and the extra apps are growing to be more and more faster in making complex stuff that used to take quite some time. Like Skinvue for example, or the normal Vue that can make realistic terrain/sky if you just got the CPU power to render the scenes.
One thing those who make 3D models to keep an eye out is Modo, it's taken the 3D community by storm. Not nearly as popular as 3ds MAX atm, but it's catching up very fast. It's extremely easy for both newbies and pro's to get into as the interface is very nicely organized.
Check it out: http://www.luxology.com/
They got 15-day trial.
This be the program I really started to learn 3D modelling with, (King Tiger on the earlier pages of this thread.) I had tried 3ds MAX dozens of times, but it's interface was just so clumsy for a newbie to learn.

I saw Modo while i was flicking through a 3d magazine down my local newsagent a few months ago, someone had made an awesome Spitfire with, they seemed to be saying it was good for making vehicles and such. Might give it a try.

You can do pretty much any 3D work with it. It comes with sculpting tools etc. so not just machinery but organic stuff is doable.

Technically you can do whatever you want with pretty much any serious modelling software, the question is how easy it is to do.

Aye, that's true.
Anywho, here's a great tutorial series for modo that shows how to build an mech/tank thingy. You get a pretty good sense on how easy the program is to use.

Dowly, how are you finding Modo? How does it compare to say 3ds Max, in terms of ease of use, render quality/time etc?
Wouldn't switch to anything else. Very easy to use and learn. I heard Industrial Light & Magic switched to Modo awhile back too. :yep:
I mostly do non-textured renders, so they are pretty fast. Once you start using complex materials with reflections etc. the render times go up naturally, but it's not that bad. Think it took 4-5 minutes to render an 1280x720 version of the Minigun with some extra geometry and all kinds of shiny materials in it. :hmmm:
Definitely a worth to check out, think they got a 15-day trial on their page. :salute:
@ Dowly : I can do it in a few seconds at my end once the light in the scene is set up correctly. :o
Dowly, how are you finding Modo? How does it compare to say 3ds Max, in terms of ease of use, render quality/time etc?
I guess you guys need some help in 3DS regarding lights ? :yeah:
As what you need to have in the scene is an atmospheric light, I think you've all been amazed by the time you need to render a scene with some skylight included, eh. :nope:
Why does it take so much time ?
The more light rays, the more atmospheric the light will be, the better it will look in the end... And consequently ? The more time you'll need to render the scene.
How to reduce the number of light rays, thus reducing rendering times ? :hmmm:
Simple.
Create your skylight. Select "Rendering" at the top of the screen, and click on "Light Tracer". Then, decrease the original number of rays/sample (250, originally). Decrease it to something like 100, for example, and your rendering time is going to be reduced by... 2000 % ? (yes, 2000)
:|\\
Apart from that... Pretty good job so far, Dowly, keep it up ! :arrgh!:
@ Dowly : I can do it in a few seconds at my end once the light in the scene is set up correctly. :o
Maybe you got better PC? :O:
Oh certainly not, trust me. :03:
Regarding atmospheric lighting, when you want to reduce rendering times what matters is the number of light rays, and that's all.
Err, maybe not :hmm2:, you should use the light tracer too to reduce it even more...
In a video that is.
For a screenshot, reducing the number of light rays of the skylight will do.

Just did this today on tablet. My attempt of the Oberon Class after flipping through my Submarines book when I got bored.
The image was too small for me to attempt drawing details (and I googled, but several results were too different or didn't have top views). So I sort of made it a foggy morning or something XD Take in mind I have not drawn submarines for.... a year and a half or so? I'm trying to dig up my old pics of the HMAS Rankin and my own submarine that I made up for my story (yes I write stories).

Few recent renders, started getting back into Poser again :D Rather pleased with these two, some of the first I've done with displacement turned on. Tried displacememnt before but it seemed to just slow render times down, but if you only put 0.1 on then it's perfectly adequate and you still get fine render times :) these are also some of the only ones which I've edited in Photoshop too.

Sadly, most of my old inks, paints, airbrush supplies and design markers live forgotten in a box in the closet. Too slow, too messy, too toxic. I did learn a lot from the years of traditional media though. And at least the pencils still get a healthy workout most days. :)

Hi Betonov, not sure if I understand you correctly but I think you're referring to what is generally known as the 'inking stage'. I have worked in the comics industry myself in the UK, and most comic artists will generally use either brushes, dip-pens or technical pens for this task (certainly is in the example above), or a combination of those. This is a whole skill in itself and the quality of your linework can make or break the artwork. Most comic artists develop their own style over time, and it is as much the linework as it is their drawing skills that make their work stand out. Certainly in the old days, there used to be a penciller and an inker, so different are the skills.
As with anything like this it is all about practice, no tutorial can teach you to do this as you will develop your own style over time. There's a couple of simple tips I can give you that might get you started-
-Increase the thickness of your lines anywhere where there would be 'shadow', and decrease the thickness where there would be 'light'- In the example cartoon above, you can see the artist has done this (thicker lines underneath the arms, head,etc.. and thinner lines above. This is why a brush is good for this task as simple pressure can alter thickness, dip-pen the same to some extent. Personally I use a brush, though both take a great deal of control and practice.
- Balance black & white areas. Create a balance between the black and the white. I think of it in terms of 'weight'. black is heavy, white is light. Arrange things logically with that in mind.
Hope this helps you. Good luck!

Just make a selection for the area you want to be in focus, invert the selection,
feather and blur.

Fairly sure I haven't posted this one.
The following is a map I drew of the Unterzee in the game, Sunless Sea, prior to the patch that randomized some of the island. But, there will be some spoilers as to the locations of some fixed islands.
http://i.imgur.com/E0kFdSX.jpg
I did this in GIMP 2.0. Every island and coastline is hand drawn with Wacom Intuos.
Doodled a bit, trying a new style of forest (for maps) and some water shading thingy. (Photoshop & Wacom Intuos)

Trying out this flat/2D style. Kinda ok I think for a first try. The point is to not use any shading (which I broke when I added that little bit of shading on the tower ).

Photoshop, just colors that give that far away, foggy feel.

I've never done it, but I've always figured there are times when you have to make subjective decision when coloring historical photos. For an army uniform or tank paint scheme you have surviving examples and reference. For those nondescript civilian outfits in the back ground, not so much. Just use your best judgement. I imagine even hair color can be a guess sometimes.

There were some things I had to improvise, gladly not many. Like the jacket color, I took from a finnish war movie called "Talvisota", where a officer uses the same exact looking jacket. The hat and gloves are both extremely light blue, with blending mode "color" and opacity turned down, same for the snow (nothing's quite b/w in real life, reflections etc.).
