Lieutenant Olli Remes photographed in Vilmajoki on November 21st, 1941.

During the Winter War, Remes led a detachment in Independent Battalion 17 (ErP 7), a guerrilla unit whose missions often took them behind enemy lines.
In the Continuation War he served first as a platoon leader and later as company commander in Infantry Regiment 54, before taking on company commander's duties in the 12th Brigade.
He was awarded the Cross of Freedom 4th class w/ swords, CoF 3rd class w/ swords, Winter War medal and he was the 10th recipient of the Mannerheim Cross (2nd class).
Remes was killed by a sniper's bullet two days after being promoted to the rank of Captain, on December 31st 1942 in Kriv at the age of 33.

He left behind a wife and two children.
Remes' final resting place is at Vieremä war heroes' cemetery (grave #113).

This is a bit OT, but I recently learned that you Englishmen have a kind of Bermuda triangle of yer own in place called Derbyshire. where people report seeing mysterious old warplanes flying silently and vanishing without a trace. You heard about this?

We've got a "Christo" exhibition currently at the Art Gallery.

At the Entrance there's one of his earlier masterpieces, a plastic wrapped bunch of flowers ( probably $M pricetag ).

It inspired me to have a go when I got home.

Today's 'work in progress'

https://i.imgur.com/yGw1DuC.jpg

This is a digital sketch done on the computer, using photographs of models, and is a commission from an author and Facebook buddy who's produced a couple of books about the exploits of spitfire pilots from Down Under

It shows the scene when eight Spitfires decided to mix it with around fifty german fighters, climbing to attack them head on with engine boosts engaged, knowing of the Germans' disdain for head-on confrontation. They successfully split the enemy swarm as it came down, subsequently claiming four destroyed & six damaged for no loss

There are no terrain or cloud details here, neither are the aircraft properly detailed yet... this will happen at the actual painting stage

Eichhörnchen
11-26-19, 02:30 PM
Changed things slightly: the nearest Spitfire and his wingman needed to be bigger... it's so helpful being able to manipulate the image on the pc these days

9th July 1944 near Lisieux, eight 453 Squadron spitfires take on around fifty enemy fighters in a bold climbing attack, knowing the Germans' disdain for head-on confrontations. The Aussies turned the diving enemy, who "Came down like a waterfall", and subsequently claimed 4 destroyed and 6 damaged for no loss to themselves

Yes, I actually let it lapse at the end of July but I've kept the domain name just in case I ever get to reopen it

To cut a long story short, the web hosts pulled the rug from under us by moving their business onto a new platform, meaning that my site and all the others they hosted would have to rebuild from scratch (at a cost of £270 to me) in a form that could continue to be supported. I just couldn't justify this, as I'm no longer a full time painter (since my agent died a couple of years ago I've had to pack it in)

I've moved all my work onto my own "Profile Plus" page of a proxy website

I'm still getting the odd private commission; I received this message this morning from a lady who'd just unpacked my painting of her house. She told me a few minutes ago that I am welcome to share it and her comments around:

"It's arrived! And, I LOVE it, thank you so much... this is a gift to my husband and he was gobsmacked!"

https://i.imgur.com/Mco0EkI.jpg

I'd originally envisaged a narrower canvs so as not to have to have so much lawn along the bottom, but I could only get a size 16x20". It may have been for the best after all. Getting the three mutts in was a challenge; all from diverse photographs and taken at different angles and lighting (and she wanted them right where I've put them... so small too). People expect miracles sometimes, but I usually get by

I've always liked Magpies but earlier this month the wife and I witnessed them picking off the young of the Blue Tits which were nesting in three of our boxes.

I readily admit it is down to mother nature but the noise during the carnage was quite distressing so as of a few weeks ago the dog is let out into the rear property area whenever they are spotted at any of the feeding stations.

Sorry, was going back reviewing your past postings in this thread.
Incredible work.

I have had this crazy ideas for a long time now

I call it bid for SubSim.

Eichhörnchen paint some motive and we the other members place bid on them.

Not all of them at once but one at the time.

75 % Goes to SubSim and 25 % goes to the artist - Eichhörnchen

Thanks, buddy :Kaleun_Salute: Here's a scan of a Christmas card which featured my original painting - I kind of prefer this one

Great idea, Markus but it would contravene the rules of Subsim. Anyway I don't paint at all these days - I haven't done so for over a year now since retirement. I try to keep my life as simple as possible now :)

Beautiful painting.

I also notice that (even if the number is right when you count) cats always seem to have too much legs :03:

I recently found a few of my old paintings on eBay; this one is only about 7x5 inches. I have to stress that I won't make a penny from showing these ads - I sold the paintings to a dealer many years ago but it's kind of nice to see them still changing hands for cash

Very nice Glynn but what does the date '1955' signify? Your age? Date of painting?, surely not.

Dipped my toe in the world of AI over the weekend and since I like cats and Warhammer:

Since I'm reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time atm, this one was one of the first things I wanted to try and do with AI generation. Turns out that AI really doesn't work well with multiple subjects, so I ditched the idea. Today, I sat down and decided to take another shot at it and roughly five hours and a whole lot of Photoshop later, I finally managed to make it work.

Yes :) - I often used to wonder about who bought my work and where it might be hanging; I only occasionally met with a buyer or collector, most sales being conducted through a third party (art dealer)

Today I came across the first mention I've ever encountered - outside of my own knowledge - of the artist Bernard Page's nom de plume "David Beatty". Bernard Page was a good friend to me and helped me with contacts and advice when I first took up painting full time

It was known that he reserved his best work for certain dealers and I found online today some of his marine paintings produced under both names. I am assuming that he signed the potboilers "Bernard Page" - although these look as good to me as anything he ever painted

Dear Bernard passed away many years ago - younger than I am now - and asked his & my dealer at the time to fetch his brushes to his hospital bed. He asked him to fetch me too, but by then I was living 150 miles away in the middle of nowhere and recently become car-less. I do often wish I'd been able to see him but perhaps it would've been too awful - best to remember him as he was, looking like everyone's idea of an English teacher - always in tweed jacket & corduroy pants. He liked to burn the candle at both ends, so it was said, and he always did smell pleasantly of cigars and scotch

These are not the kind of paintings I would hang up on my walls, but I definitely appreciate the clear conception of lines (dont know how to put it better), and the performing execution, which looks sober, clean and in a certain way - again in absence of better words - "photorealistic".

Clean, straight, honest, focussed painting, without foolish gimmicks. Was he a Vulcan? :).

:haha: He couldn't have been less like a Vulcan - he used to trade paintings for booze at a famous hotel and he did sway a little when he was talking to you

Here's one of mine - nowhere near his standard. They're not to my taste either to be truthful, but as with any profession you take the work when and where
