View Full Version : So i'm going to do a mod for the Type XXI

I figure since no one else that i know of has, i may as well do it as my first "offical" mod. Ive been tweaking my own game ALOT, may as well share the wealth so to speak.

Now nothings concrete yet, but i am adjusting this for GAMEPLAY BALANCE, not neccessarly HISTORICAL correctness. But if i were to do a readme file right now, it would look something like this:

Type XXI

- Battery recharge "bug" is fixed.

- Extended underwater cruising range and speed. (300 miles at 7 knots, takes about 24 hrs if i remember correctly) Still adjusting this for some semblance of balance

- Surface speed increased to 18.2 knots. (I may change it back to 15, unsure right now)

- Now steers on the surface like a VII or IX ( no more 3 point turns coming out of the docks!)

- Now dives in the same amount of time as a type VII.

- Increased maximum depth to 410 meters.

Gameplay adjustments

-AI passive hydrophones chance to detect you is virtually doubled if not a shad more (stock DD hydrophone settings, they are nearly deaf ).

- Increased AI active and passive sonar depth from 300 meters to 400 meters.

- AI active sonar now has 150 min distance, AI passiave is 10 meters min distance.

- Reduced DC radius from 40 to 25 /20 meters min distance (tenative, may change)

- Reduced sink rate of hedge hogs to be on only slighly faster then sink rate of DC.

- AI Visual min height set to 1 meter (jungmans snorkel fix)

Currently working on
-Getting the boat to work properly for years 1941 through 1945 without getting 0 patrol grid . (this is acutally the hard part)

- Floatilla adjustments to accoimdate the XXI

Ideas

- Thought it would be cool if you could use the boats hydrophones with decks awash since the hydrophone is below the waterline anyway. Thus youd be able to use radar and sonar concurrently. I think all i have to do is set the min depth to match that of decks away.

- May end up adjusting visual range, radar and radar detector values while im in the sensor.dat file

- Id recommend changing all DD crew types to elite in campaign. (mine are but im not gonna make this part of the mod)

Thinking aloud to myself im gonna lower the max surface speed back to the default, but raise the max submerged speed by 1 or 2 knot's.

The XXI has to ahve a downside somewhere, and it was designed for better submerged performance. The downside here really being convy interception and gaining contact. A type 7 or 9 is much better at this because of its surface speed as compared to a 21's. The flipside is the 21 is better submerged when contact has already been made, and that counts for alot.

But if you can push higher then 15 knots while submerged snortting in an type 21, then i think it will work out. I raised the surface speed because not a big fan of being submerged ALL the time, but thats what this boat was leaning towards, so thats what i should keep it at for any mod.

I have to wonder though, is there any intrest in the community for a full blown XXI mod beyond a recharge bug fix? I know this boat is frowned upon by many (myself included half the time, especially when used before 1943), but it still it is an intresting toy to play with non the less.

This is all I need in a XXI mod... the rest would not be necessary because I could tweak that myself...

If you know how to use TT's tweaker, you don't even need this much from me.

Heres what i adjusted:

Surface propulsion: (to slighly increase recharge rates)

- Engine power changed from 4400 to 4500
- Engine RPM chnaged from 520 to 550

Now for the important part: ( for better energy use. Type 7's and 9's have like 1000 HP for Emotor's, a type 21 has 5000 HP. i cut it in half to start, ran a test and it worked)

Submerged Engine power:(HP) Changed from 5000 to 2500.

EDIT:

As for steering, all you do is load up a type9 and/or type7 Sim file. In the Diesal section look at the values for steering and dive planes. Write these down. Then go back to your type 21 sim file and compare the values - change them as you see appropriate.

I think this is a good idea. Sometimes it can be fun to just play "what if" like a short breake from all the reality that I usually prefer.
I ask again in this thread, changing e-maschinen from 5000 hp to 2500, will it decrease underwaterspeed?
What is this stearing problem you wanted to change?

Hi, I'm not very knowledgeable in the type 21 so I trust you know what you are doing. I just hope I don't misunderstand you. To me it appears you try to balance things out gameplay wise, which to me in terms of this being is sim might be a mistake. I was under the impression that this boat was just so much superior, that it can't be 'worse' the the type 7 or 9 in anything other than size or lack of deck gun. Am I wrong? I'd rather have the boat that's as accurate as possible, and if it makes gameplay easier than with Type 7 - that should be quite realistic. Handicapping surface speed, unless Ubisoft deliberately exaggerated it can be a tricky way to go. your thoughts?

Well i kinda changed my mind and let the topic die. Much like my "monsun boat" boat.

I mainly do things for myself first, and if theres anyone intrested in it, ill zip it up and post a link, if no ones really intrested i wont bother.

As for the speed, uboat.net, which is about the best credible source i know of, lists the speeds of the type21 as 15,6 (sf),17,2 (sm) so personaly i thought giving it an underwater top speed of 18.2 or 19.2 knots was being rather generous.

oh, i'm all for realism. if it says 17 under water, make it 17.
