View Full Version : 16km visibility,Visual spotting affected by fog value

I use the original 16km visibility mod with the Seeadler's cloud fix integrated by miself ( i stay with the default reflexions and sea colors,
just a question of personal taste). The mod is really nice and the new visibility improve really the sim. But with the new visibility values we
are loosing this real life effect of the horizon blur at extreme range, an
effect well rendered in the standard game. So i explored the scene.dat file
and i have found that the fog distance value was tweaked. I reintregated
the horiginal fogdistance value in the 16km Scene.dat file and the horizon blur came back. But something found to be just an eyecandy tweak
appears in fact to affect the detection capabilty of the crew to detect
an another object at long range, this effect as also en influence on your
potential to see another object.
Maybe something to adjust to obtain realistic spotting capabilities, at night
for exemple.

Interesting Kaleunt! :hmm:
Can you develop this further. Have you got reduced nightspottings with this change?
How did it affect dayspottings, spottings in fog?
16 km vismod have night spottings up to 9000m. Little to far to my taste.
How is it now?

I continue to test with the fog values from the original scene.dat file
But i have just only run the "Happy times" mission. The result is:
As soon as the mission is loaded the message box to engage a spotted
target is displayed, My crew reports immediately multiple visual contacts.
The majority of the convoy is visible at around 10000m and you
begin to see the mast and smoke of the last ships of this convoy over the horizon. THe crew seems to be affected by the light of the sunset because
he have a tendancy to detect them later than others contacts( so the light factor has an influence too). The reinforcing ASW escort comming from East ( beginning of dusk luminosity environnement) is detected by the crew at the same time than the convoy, i can see the smoke of these ship over the fog of the horizon at a range of around 14000 m.
I use the standard Sensor.dat file not the one you have tweaked.
The good point is that my crew report the same contacts that i see at the same time.
I didn't run the tests at night because i just began them the last evenning.
Iwill try this evening.

Ok Kaleunt.
I will wait your reports.

My question is how are you able to see them if you are running with the standard sensors.dat? I recently looked in there and it is only set to visual distance of 6000-8000 meters.
And do you have any pictures of that eye-candy fog?

Sorry Markhimov, is not the standard Sensors.dat that is concerned
but the standard Sensor.Cfg wich was ajusted by Rulle 34 in the original
16km visibilty mod.

Oh, so is that a mis-type?

Oh thank you to make the correction, yes, it was amis-type i wanted to speak of the Sensors.Cfg file i didn't touch the Sensoes.dat files.

I'm glad that was cleared up.

The "standard" values in sensors.cfg from the before-tweaked-values was from Ortega's original visibility mod. His mod had this vampire vision values night (same as day) (no offence here Manuel). That's the reason I started to tweak the values (and so was oRGY, Gammel, Jungman)
What I understand now is that you have Ortega's standard values but has instead tweaked the fogvalues in sensors.cfg? Is that right?
If so, just make sure you try this in fog, because I think messing with the fog value can cause this "0-visibility" in fog. I think Jungman had this experience if Im not remember wrong.
Or have I misunderstand this? :dead:

I have tweaked the fogdistance value in the Scene.dat file, Manuel had
changed a value disabling fog at the Horizon. For my test a wanted to begin with "clean" Scensors.cfg so i didn't install the Scensors.cfg from
the 16 km mod. So i made no changes to all kind of sensors files.
The Fogdistance Hex-value in the scene date is something like 2F0100000018 in Manuel's version "18" was replaced by "99 "with this value the horizon line seems too clear, i came back to 18 the "foggy horizon" came back and my crew stay with the capacity to spot objects over 14000m at day. I made some more tweaks another value as the same Hex-value, it's the YScaleForFog value. Changing the "2F"value to "5E"for exemple and my creek could spot 2 destroyers at 30000m
and 31500m respectively around 18h30 during a test using the "Gibraltar"
mission. So i think that the Fogdistance and YScaleForFog values in the Scene.Dat file seems to determinate the limits of the field of view.
This works with the 8km Scene.DAT if we could double the spotting distance in this File no more need of a 16km mod.
